Default Club Car Steering Shaft

Hello, I'm new to the forum, and it's nice to have so many of you with extensive golf cart experience, and that you are willing to share that experience and expertise. I'll try and follow the rules, and to avoid making mistakes. I'm 68, and have been a car guy and built several cars over my many years. However, this is my first golf cart build.

Does anyone know how to lengthen or add an extension to a Club Car steering shaft? I have an '87 Club Car DS that I'm building with a Honda engine and custom 1934 Ford body. The chassis must be lengthened by 8" to accommodate the longer body. That puts the male splined shaft coming out of the rack & pinion, and the female u-joint on the end of the steering shaft approx. 6 inches apart. The body manufacturer's answer to this is to use 1/2" O.D. steel rod inserted into 1/2" female thin wall tubing, and weld the ends to the R&P shaft and u-joint, and then weld the rod and tube where they index over each other. This seems unacceptable to me, and I'm hoping, with your help that there's a better way.

I measured the splined shaft coming out of the rack & pinion. It is .585" O.D., with 29 splines (I think, as my eyes crossed about the 5th time I tried to count!)

Thanks ahead for your help.

Thanks Dave. I'll contact M&M and ask of the shaft size/diameter and # of splines is the same. If so, I can shorten or lengthen this extension.

You're a "cart-saver"! Thanks again

Well, SHOOT! I talked with a guy (name withheld) at M&M and was told that the Precedent steering extension won't work on a DS. I asked if the shaft size and spline count are same as DS, and I'm not sure he really answered that question. I was encouraged however when he said they sell an extension kit for the DS, and that they use this when they put the higher lift kits in. He even told me that it clamped on one end. I thought something was not right when he told me the kit sells for $7.88. But, I ordered it anyway, and received it yesterday. I was sure disappointed when I opened the package and what did I find? A piece of steel rod and a piece of steel pipe. Instructions show that all connections need to be welded. Back to Square One!

Dave, or anyone else, do you know if this Precedent Extension has the same shaft size and spline count as the DS model? Can I use this extension?

I have my fingers crossed that this will indeed work. Thanks for the assist

YES, that does look like my solution. I was looking (online) yesterday at Jake's Hi-Lift kit for the DS, and it had the same extension. So, I sent a message to Glen there. I hope to receive an answer soon. I'll call them if I don't hear from him.

Thanks again for helping me with a solution for this issue.

Sorry, make that Jake's "Long Travel" lift kits, and not Hi-Lift. Don't know where that came from.
