Leaf spring help
Long time, no see! It's been many years since I was on here last. Lot's of life changes. Anyway...
I have a 1994.5 Ez-go gas cart with a 6" lift from Desert Sports Center(?) that I installed in about 2004 or so. They sold out to Buggies Unlimited shortly after that. The kit came with a 4" drop axle for the front, and new leaf springs for the rear. Here's the issue. The DSC springs have an extra 3"-4" of arc in them to make up 4" of the 6" lift. Those 3-leaf springs were great, but after adding a seat kit and riding 4-5 full+ grown adults, the springs have to much flex. I need stiffer springs! When I have 4 adult on the cart, and take a hard turn they compress way too much making the ride seem dangerous. I toiled over the issue, and finally took a chance and bought the HD 4 leaf kit, hoping it would be close to the same amout of lift. Wrong on my part! With the kit installed, the cart sits 3"+- low in the back, and the flex of those springs is only a little different than the old ones. Insert your own cuss words here: I have looked at numerous springs online, but none of them give details of the amount of arc in them. The large 1-800 golf cart part companies are not much help, they have order takes, not problem solvers. Does anyone know of some of other spring spec's? I need a spring that is 1.75" wide (standard I think), 27" on center from eye hole to eye hole, and stand 7" tall, which is from ground to the top of the arc if the eye holes were on the ground. I also need this spring to be HD for carrying the weight of the added seat kit, two adults, and a cooler! I saw a HD Club Car spring pic that has a lot of arc, but that's just a picture and an old 70's-80's Ez-go looks to have a lot of arc. I am considering taking the new and old springs to a local leaf spring company and have them combine some of the parts to make a Frankinspring, but that's kind of plan E. Plan D is to find new springs. Plan C is to lower the front and live with it. Plan B is to add 2"-3" to new shackles that I can fabricate, which seems like a bad plan. So, I am looking for possible solutions if anyone has suggestions. I will try to post some pics on here to further explain my issue. Thanks for any help you all may have. |

Re: Leaf spring help
4 leaf springs usually do the job, are your shocks good? and you can get more lift by adding some blocks btwn the spring
and axle, I've used 1.5 x 2" square steel tubing with a couple holes drilled in them for the spring alignment pin. |

Re: Leaf spring help
Above are the old springs. 27" o.c. for a lenoth, and 6.5" tall.
I may fabricate the longer shackles as a temporary fix for street usage. I don't think the shackles are the best answer for off road usage. |

Re: Leaf spring help
Just a guess, but being worn out the height may be from the weight/sag over time causing permanent bend? If you go to EZGO parts site you can enter your serial number and see what part number you need for HD spring, if thats the route you want to go. Then if you want to go aftermarket, they usually have cross reference part number to ensure a fit. I just replaced with the 4 leaf (with a new rear seat) mentioned before and it made noticeable difference. I also replaced the hardware with new grade 8 bolts, nuts and washers.

Re: Leaf spring help
Pardon the stupid question, but you do have the springs mounted on top the axle right? I have stock 2 leaf springs on my TXT that are almost
totally flat with 2" blocks. I stuck with the stock springs for a softer ride, of course I don't have a back seat or haul 4 people around. |

It's always nice to reply to people that try to help you out, especially when they
have to go out in a cold barn and take a picture trying to help... |
