Led strip light help
Hello all. I am currently trying to put a set of 4 led strip lights on my roof (for a dome light kind of). The problem I am running into, is that when I got the lights mounted and the wires ran, I ran them directly to the battery to check for correct operation before running the wires to my switch. When I did this they light up and after a few seconds one or two of the leads off of the led strips start smoking and starts melting the insulation of the wire. Any thoughts as to why this would happen? I tested all the lights before I stuck them on and they seemed to work fine. This is a gas 6 seater EZgo 2014 or 15 model I think. Also here's a link to the lights I bought.

Re: Led strip light help
did you run it to 12v or the pack voltage (36v or 48v) ?

Re: Led strip light help
All I can think of the top of my head would be a short somewhere maybe you nicked the wire insulation when you ran it. or if you had a kink in the wire when you ran it you may have pulled the strands apart causing a week spot in the wire. What I would do is put a fuse as close to the battery as you can and test it if it blows the fuse you have a short if it starts to smoke again I would say there is a week spot in the wire there. In either situation it would probly be easier to just replace the wire unless it's in a spot you can fix it?

Re: Led strip light help
haha yeah its a 12v. There might be some nicks where I was pulling it through the roof supports. I am going to run new wire and try again. I for sure will try the fuse suggestion also.

Re: Led strip light help
I have done it lots of times myself I have also pulled the little 18-22 gauge wire apart where it kinked and I didn't know it and it melted right there.. haha live and learn Ben pulling wire on tractor trailers about 10 years now and still do things like that.

Re: Led strip light help
It it where me I would run 16gauge wire the whole way and leave about 12" on the light that gives you room to fix it if need be at some point
