Custom G2 Front Suspension
I started working on my cart back in January with the idea of having a closed cab and heat. LOL After replacing the carburetor - insulator and air cleaner -- I found it was a smoker choker drive you out of the garage engine. Runs well for the condition it's in. For what I want it for I decided on replacing the engine with the Vegas Carts 460 clone. The trouble is if you want to go fast you need to stop just as fast and 2 wheel brakes aren't enough. Jakes doesn't make a brake kit for a non-lifted G2 so I'm improvising. Going faster requires better handling characteristics the what a single frame front suspension can provide.
I started with a Jakes 7 inch lift kit ---- lowered it 6 inches and re-configured the spindle mount to be completely adjustable. At 62 years old Its impossible for me to get in a lifted cart -- this is why I lowered it. Here are a few pictures of my work. As far as handling goes -- at 21 mph it goes forever in a straight line with no hands on the wheel. Next major purchase will be a brake kit. I also converted the front hubs to tapered roller bearings instead of the original ball bearings. |

Nice job......... Where there is a will there is always a way.
The setup looks pretty good but do you have any problem bottoming out if you get in heavy/rough terrain? It looks like the upper A-arms may contact with very little movement, but it's hard to really tell from just the pictures. |

Re: Custom G2 Front Suspension
Thank you. As I was building it I thought about the same problem. I worked out the travel of the shock in relation to the travel of the a frame. After it was completed and on the floor I had a 200 plus pound person jump on the front end and -- no problems. If the shocks bottom out there is still 1/2-3/4" clearance.
I ride farm roads and fields to hunt woodchucks. I'm more into scooting around the back roads where a little more speed and better brakes are required. I just bought a VC460 and I'm saving my cash to be able to get a Rapid Response Roller clutch. I want to bullet proof this little engine. I like the design. I have found a 200 watt charge coil and the engine already has the proper flywheel. It produces 17 amps on paper which is more then the stock generator. I'm going to try using a starter -- not mounting the old starter/generator, It should have a little more power not turning all the weight in the starter. This is getting away from the OP so I better stop. Thank you again. |
