Looking To Build " My Golf Car " ...
Hi Guys,
I am wanting to build " My Golf Car ".. Let me share a little history : my 1st car was an '09 RXV Electric. I went a little nuts on it, as any good power junkie would ..Lol in doing so my wife was, lets say not so happy with my end results.. she hated the Long Travel suspension, she hated the extra power, blah , blah " I just want my old putt , putt cart back..." So begrudgingly I sold it and bought her a new 2017 ezgo S4 gasser for her and the grandkids to putter around on.. Now it's cool and all but I have been warned in VERY choice wording I am Not to touch it... Fine , I will buy and build " My Car " ... Here is where I need some suggestions 1) What to look for as a solid starting point ? 2) I would like to be in the 25ish HP range , more is cool too , with good torque and power. Gasser of course 3) It will be another long travel build . 4) not too hung up on brand I have been a 1:1 car racer, builder , fabricator for over 45 years so I feel I have a pretty fair handle on the mechanical side of the project... With that said I appreciate the " been there, done that " aspect of experience on golf cars where I have limited knowledge .. Being open minded and listening to others saves money and time in my experience. So I humbly ask for opinions and facts in my new endeavor . Thank You , Giz. |

Any particular year models I should use as a target platform for this uild ? Are there any shops/links out there that have " built " Vanguard motors and accy's , intake, carb, exhaust , for them ? I would also like to make sure the drivetrain can handle the power without having to replace suspect pieces right out of the gate... Any and all input is much appreciated Giz. |

CPP has kits (cartpartsplus) for vanguards. You can mod them all you want, very popular engine for lawn racing and all that stuff. Exhaust can be harder to figure out on a cart for any motor depending what you want. I think Vegas carts also has some kits for twins.
I think the yamaha is a better cart IMHO, newer is great but not sure on the drive as the clutches have had issues I would stick with a cart just older unless you find a sure answer on that here (I have not investigated). Ezgo also popular, a really nice cart is their work cart its about a foot longer and gives you more engine room as well. Some even have posi. Make sure you can get a double a arm lift those are nicest. I don't like CC as well though lots of people lift them, the front suspension is different, really I would not recommend any spindle lift or extension if you want the best offroad capabilities the dual arm is simply way better. You could also fabricate an atv front onto a cart and you can also get front brakes in the deal with those. You may have to figure out wheel adapters or something as they are not 4/4 GC pattern, but its been done many times on here. Lot of people like the Jakes LT lift, though I don't know your budget or what you plan to do with the cart. I tend to trail ride so I like to aim for that as well as utility use or local running around. I don't run pavement. Most all the rears are HD enough though the newer CC turn backwards and then you have to run in reverse or use jackshafts, and reverse gear is a lower ratio so they go slower, then you have to put HS gears in them too or run larger tires. Though some CC fit 28s it can be harder on a yamaha to do that. Some CC also have 1" clutches that are not ideal. Anyway that is my 2 cents if I were going to build another cart. Make sure you rifle through members rides here, engine biulds, Thenewguys builds, etc. |
