Default What do folks think?

I'm just entering into the market for a cart that I can build out with a lift etc. for moderate off road use and around the farm kind of use. My desire is a cart with some form of dump but its not a necessity. It seems to me from all I read is that gas is the way to go and in that market EZGO and Club Car are the most cost effective although I am a fan of all things Yamaha. It would take a heck of a sell to move me to an electric cart because all I seem to read indicates the best power and cost effectiveness comes from gas.

What do people with experience think? What direction should I go? Remember I want to build and accessorize.

Thanks so much for helping me.

Welcome to BGW!

In my opinion, Gas Yamaha is the only way to go. I just like the Yamahas, well made.

In my own opinion,....

Ezgo easiest to lift and modify.

Yamaha is going to be the work horse.

Have never modified a Club Cart.

Love my g14. The tube frame is bullet proof. But lifting it and putting bigger tires is an issue without spending a little cash.

All of the big 3 have tons of aftermarket parts available.

Lots of info. Almost too much it's so overwhelming. You can read my build thread in my signature. Lots of info. If I did it over, i wouldnt waste the time on any engine other than the Vegas carts. Buy the engine and install kit. Youll be done with the "hard part" in an afternoon instead of weeks or months.

Check the torque of an electric motor vs a gas engine. You'll be shocked ;) Even with 2-3X the HP the gas cart engine may only have have half the torque.

That certainly doesn't make the electric cart the right choice as charging the electric carts is a big deal vs the freedom from AC a gas powered cart offers.

The Club Car Precedent is a hard combination to beat if you can find the right buy.

I was just on their site. Very cool, so these guys provide a fully built gas motor ready to go. Can I make the assumption that the reason to go this route is that a built up gas cart will need a motor that's got a little more than a stocker that runs good?

Well lots of reasons actually. Youll end up replacing the HF carb anyways, makes driveability much better, the VC engine already has a billet connecting rod so youre safe over 4k rpm vs HF which isnt. Better camshaft so more power, longer stroke, more power, more bolts golding engine case halves together, means stronger. The list just keeps going. In the long run, you'll end up spending at least as much on the HF engine as the VC engine costs, and it still wont be as good as the VC. I know that kinda change hurts all at once, but its worth it...

A well running, stock Yamaha cart--G16 or G22 is my preference--would work out fine for around the house/farm use. Upgrade the secondary clutch with a Plowmans setup, or a Yamaha U-Max spring if the cart is lifted with larger tires.

<--- I love my Big Block Vanguard G16, but for putting around the property, I like the ease and quietness of the stock platform G16.

I would agree and even an old G9 like mine, but I would get newer today I got mine in 99. Get a cut secondary sheave at CPP it gives a lower gear you can tow better and climb better and theirs is a heavy one not cheap thin one, run a umax spring they are $15 or something it is needed when you lift it. Plowmans may be better depends on your budget but above setup works well. IMO yamaha is best cart and well built, ezgo more popular and not a bad choice but not quite as nice. I don't like CC for my use I don't want alum frame and 1" belt and engine backwards rotation are a mess to deal with. Still a good cart just not for me. You put a clone or vegas 460 in you will be amazed they are like twice the power and much more speed for not that much money compared to other engines. You can mod clones all you want lots of stuff out there but vc460 has most of it already its well worth it, its already upgraded significantly. Make sure you put ATV tires on they are much more HD I'd recommend 22s at least big choice of tires. Some yamaha you can go 24 but can take some work to get larger if you want to go more. But 22-23 is a good package very capable. Many carts with 22s can hit about 40mph with a vc460 and stock gears, has great power for normal stuff or trails. A stock 420 clone about 30mph no governor but $30 or something for HD springs and timing key will get you 35 or so. But the vc460 has a cam in it and will have more power than a 420. Its more HD but all the clones are similar design other than the hemi HF versions the head is different. The 420 is overbored gx390 honda copy, the 440 460 are stroked also iirc. So bore and crank can be different, some rods are longer.
