Is this type of lift common? Pic included
I have a jeep body club car I'm rebuilding. The cart has been this way for 20 years so I know it works. I just have never seen a lift like this.
Was this custom done, or maybe factory? The frame is cut, and then a steel plate bolted to raise the frame itself. |

They refer to that style lift as a Z lift.

Re: Is this type of lift common? Pic included
It seems I posted this too early. After some more research I find that It is common. Does that raise the back also or is something done to it also? I ask because I'm wondering would a a arm lift still work if I wanted a little more lift. I just don't know if the parts would be compatible now. |

The z-lift started as a factory lift. Yours is homemade/custom. On your rear they put longer spring shackles to even it out. Dave at revolution got me the same shackles for my daughters 08 DS. I added a block to the front. Just enough for the 20" tires to clear. Didn't want a full lift as it's a kids cart.

Z lift will "work" but they are less than desirable. Also not very strong when it comes to side loads. I bought my cart with a Z lift and it was the first thing I removed on the cart. There are much better ways to lift a cart to keep the strength and greatly improve the ride quality of the front.

Re: Is this type of lift common? Pic included
a lot depends on how You plan on using the cart - for on-road and groomed stuff I'd say You're fine with the lift that's on there, the "Z" lift was 2 plates (one on each side) and left some room for lateral flex under load, but yours (albeit home-made) eliminated a lot of that by design as the plate double-serves as a "crossbrace" of sorts.
Adding a lift to a lift is almost NEVER a good idea, BTW - all lifts have their quirks and limitations, so if You start piling them on top of each other the sum may actually be far greater than the individual components, if that makes sense.I had a customer bring in an EZGO with a spindle lift on a drop-axle lift and a bunch of hokey adaptations to the rear, it was a pretty serious LOOKING cart but wow did that thing inspire terror driving it even on the mild trails we have here at the shop for testing ... |

I'll probably drive it on road 90%, and in the yard the rest. Probably never in the woods or serious off road. I was just wondering about putting a A-arm lift to give it more of a jeep look. It rides and handles well, but the back does ride like a buggie. I'm sure the shocks are shot though. |

I posed the same question some 7 years ago... and I was given the same advice that Brew City gave! (but, I didn't listen!)
I added a Jakes 3" spindle lift, then just recently, I changed them out to an All Sports 4" A-arm... IMG_3165.JPG HOWEVER... my factory Z, and your homemade Z, have HUGE differences! I'd be VERY concerned about the geometry of your steering components, Mainly, the tie rod coming off of the Rack and Pinion gear box... it needs to be straight from the R&P to the spindle, with yours being on THAT much of an angle, the inner ball joint at the R&P will break! (not IF... but... WILL!) Unless you do something different with your existing homemade Z lift, I would NEVER add to it! My .02 |

Re: Is this type of lift common? Pic included
I'm still unsure what route to go with the suspension. I could possibly change out the z lift bracket, but the one there is pretty stout.
The rear also has a problem in that it has car shocks on it. They are good, but they are compressed all the way in only giving an inch or so of travel. That is part of the reason I want more lift. It will open up some travel without buying more rear shocks. Would a taller z lift be better than adding a 3"-4" a-arm lift? |
