Jumping on Acceleration

I have a Patriot LSV and I have just finished a cycle of charging where the batteries were too dead for the onboard "quick charger" to even begin charging. I used a separate charger to charge up all 8 batteries to the point where the onboard would take over and have now gone through one completed F3 cycle. The good news is the cart now has power but when I try to accelerate it jumps like either there is a short in the power or the transmission is slipping. This does not happen when just give the pedal a little push but only when I try to go any faster than a crawl. Does this sound like something you have seen or dealt with before. Any tips you can provide will be much appreciated. I can provide a video of the symptom if that would be helpful.

Classic symptom of a bad battery pack.

How old are the batteries by the date stamp/sticker on them? Give some individual voltage readings and the entire pack reading.

+1 on the batteries.

Remember, you started with a dead and probably abused pack. You were able to get them to charge, bu no one knows what kind of life they have led or have left. Time to start testing, or buy a new pack.

I would put on the charger let it charge until it stops, then check the water and fill if the fins are above the water line. Just a little over the top of the fins 1/4 inch for now. Then plug the charger in again. The next day un plug it and plug it in again until it stops. Now see it it runs.

If this works it only temporary.

I just went through this on my cart and I had 1 battery with a bad cell and one battery that wasn't far from being bad. Mine would full charge run great for about a mile then start jumping and cutting out.

Thank all of you for the comments - I could not find a sticker on the batteries for a date but I called the former owner and he says they are at least 6 years old and maybe 7. I have run them through another full charge cycle and the jumping has subsided but I they are still weak. Based on what everyone is saying, it sounds like they probably need to be replaced - I was hoping I could make it through the coming hunting season :-) but alas that may not be the case. Thanks again everyone!!!!

You were right - two full cycles and the jumping went away - but still weak. :-)

You might be able to limp it around the neighborhood but hunting and long distance you need to think about a new pack. Also if your going to upgrade the power make a plan BEFORE you buy new batteries. Lots of stories here about people getting new carts and buying batteries only to regret not going to lithium or higher voltage or amp hrs.

Drive the cart around everyday and charge it and the pack might keep coming back but it will only go so much. Problem I found with old abused batts is if you forget about it for a week or two you'll have to start over on the conditioning process.

If you don't have a volt meter get one. Check the pack voltage 12 hrs after a full charge and look at the chart to see how full you get.

Thanks Crazy Dad - so that does generate another thought - Patriot made 2 versions originally - 48 volt and I think 96 Volt - If I decided to up my voltage and go with 12 volt batteries instead of 48 - what I am really looking at? does the whole cart have to be rewired - or is it just as simple as buying bigger batteries?

I'm not familiar with patriot but the idea is a stock cart is made to run reliably (slower) and longer like three rounds of golf in a day. You up the wire size and get a controller that puts out more juice so you have more flow to the motor that equals power and torque. Most motors can handle more voltage so when you add more volts to the more and faster flow you get a big smile. I just don't know about what parts you need for your cart.

One thing that is trending around here is going from lead acid batteries to lithium it saves you about 300 lbs, that like two adults getting off your cart. Also instead of 48 volts some of these custom packs are 50-56 volts so more power. But I have no data on your cart so someone will have to chime in on parts. If you have not done searches here on patriot try that also.
