Default 1965 CUSHMAN conversion

So i'm new here (see post in introductions ) and I am going to try and make my old 1965 electric cushman into an off road buggy. I don't expect this thing to be a mud runner, or anything crazy powerful, just go down my old logging roads and timber trails to get me to a stand or turkey hunting spot. I have no idea where to start! If you guys could give me some direction on what I should do to kick my project off that would be great! Past experience with other projects tells me that asking some people as crazy as yourself saves time in the long run!! Thanks in advance guys!

You will need machine shop experience and and fabrication experience.

Also you'll be ok as long and you dont want to do the "ultimate No No", and that is to turn an electric cart in to a gasoline cart. You will likely scrap the entire project after a while when you find it has no reverse and the motor cant swing with the axle. The end result is a cart that is ruined, deemed scrap and you can't give it away.

If you are going to put a gasoline engine in a gasoline cart, you should be ok with the exception of the first sentence above.

Nope, it's 36 volt, and i plan on leaving it electric. It's really the reason I want to do this, because I want a vehicle that is quiet! Otherwise I have an ATV I could ride anywhere! All I really want to do to this cart is lift the suspension a bit and get some bigger tires and rims on it for clearence and traction. I'm actually taking it over to the shop tonight to get a good look at the suspension system in it. I'm hoping I can just do kind of a body lift and find some plain jane tires!! I'm sure I'll have to extend some things in the process.

Default Re: 1965 CUSHMAN conversion PICS!

Got some pics last night, and I really hope I can get something figured out, cause she's built like a tank! I need help on where to start and what to do, and it's pretty apparent that I am going to need more power if I am going to lift it and put on bigger tires!!

This is how the front axel is attached with one ball joint thing, you'll see in the following pics that the rear is attached with two of these.

and again

Front suspension

Rear end attachment

Motor area, ge 36 volt with belt drives.

More motor and controller pictures

And I found this kick azz old metal cooler that is circa the same year that the cart was made (maybe a bit older) that I am going to incorperate in the build because it looks like it goes with it!!

I like the body style it has. I think that cart has a lot ofpotential with some body work/paint and some nice wheels.
You definately have to fix and mount that cooler in the rear bagwell area

I don't want to discourage you but more power is not practicle with the present speed control wiper system..... It kinda is what it is power wise with out a conversion to solid state controls ......

looks to me like a smaller pulley on the motor could make up the difference in the gearing cause of the tire change.

Yeh Jon, that might be a better way to go at this project, certainly cheaper too
