Winch install
Hey guys, I'm planning to put a winch on the front of my cart, but in a little confused if it will work.
I'm looking at the harbor freight ones. It looks like it runs on 12 but it says it could pull 100 amps depending on the load? How to you make that happen on a 48v cart?? Seems like a monster dc-dc converter. But then I wonder how they put these things on atvs. There's no way there are 100 amps of power available in an atv battery. What am I missing? Re: Winch install
You'll need to install an aux 12V battery to power it.

Re: Winch install
If you were to run the winch very long on an atv you would want the engine running. But if you read the winch manual you will find they recommend running it for something like 15-30 seconds then resting. If you are causing the winch to pull 100 amps you are putting a real big strain on the winch.
The regular 12v convertors for carts really aren't made to run more than rudimentary accessories. A winch really needs a good size 12v battery. Especially if you want to get your sparky cart home after winching out of a hole. That's why my cart has a gas tank. |

Re: Winch install
That's a good way to kill your pack fast if you're using the winch very often. If the winch is there just for insurance, then tapping into 2 batteries of the pack might not be a problem. But I still didn't do it considering the cost we pay for batteries.
A 12V aux battery is cheaper than a pack. |

I've got 6-8v in the pack. It's insurance, but I will go with a 12v battery....just have to remember to keep it charged haha.

Mines on a gas cart. Since I had the plug laying around, I did this. I leave it unplugged with the ends taped over until I need it.

Re: Winch install
Are you going to use the winch, for hunting purposes? Or will it be used for recovery purposes?
I think I've used my winch once or twice for recovery, But has used it many many times for field dressing dear and pigs..... |
