ATV.....yeah I've had this conversation with some friends before....First let me say this. There is no such thing as "ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE" because nothing can go everywhere. Even a SxS or Quad has its limitations. Ok, I'm splitting hairs here....but it's true.

I prefer the terms "Off Road Vehicle" or "Mud Buggy" or "Quad" or "SxS" or "Dirt Bike" or other various terms like this. I think the term "ATV" is overused and doesn't really fit any specific vehicle anymore, other than "Quads".

Now, as far as golf carts go....I still call mine a golf cart, and it's far from it. It's an off road machine, purpose built for climbing hills, going through mud, going fast, etc. But.....the name sticks. And it's cool to see peoples reactions when I say, "Go ahead and take my golf cart for a ride" and rest assured, they always come back with a smile on their face.

Why? It's different. It's ugly. It's dirty. But man is it fun!

So, in summary, and in keeping with the OP's subject.....Golf carts will always be golf carts to me. ATV's are quads. SxS are side by sides. We all are allowed to call them whatever we like. And we all like what we like. It's what makes America Great!

By the way......I DON'T GOLF!!!!

Most Terrain Vehicle just isnt as catchy.

As a definition, I believe that golf carts, quads, sides by sides or dirt bikes or even snowmobiles can all be considered ATV's its just that some are more capable than others.

I want my MTV......

my immediate property that my home sits on, is right at 13 acres...half of that is in woods and I've got nice walking/riding trails cut, much of which run along a nice deep/wide creek...our area is fairly flat...only a couple places with any rise at all..so it's offroad at it's easiest...there's a large open field area that only gets rough cut when needed..so not exactly a smooth cart path..the biggest challenge is with all the rain we've had...some areas tend to stay wet and mud can get ankle deep...so between the rough cut field and some mud spots, the cart lift is needed and the more aggressive tires do their job...the power upgrades give me enough to muscle through some of the thicker stuff.
but I avoid really bad mud pit areas and deep standing water from flooding rains that make the creek overrun it's bank. I'm not into mudding, so I avoid as much of that as I can even on my quad....but on those days when I want to recon the property or need to go out back through some bad stuff to get to another part of the property...it's usually a swap over to the quad rather than abusing my GC.
not discounting the GC.. I am impressed with what it is able to handle now...but I tend to know that line in the sand (mud) when I see it.
knowing what most deer hunt properties in our area are like, I can see where a GC would cover most everything I need...and certainly spending more money to improve my GC's suspension etc...but again... I'd be just doing more towards building a GC into an ATV....

What I really like about golf carts is they can be whatever we want them to be. So another way to phrase the question might be: when are they not a golf cart anymore?

Well, in order to go the places that we at least try to go (and succeed more times than not) in our "ATVs" i would still need to do A LOT of work to my golf cart... Plus i think i would be making lots of repairs to it after every trip. However, I encourage anyone to come along with us and bring whatever motor powered vehicle they have... We have winches for a reason.

Well what ever ya call the madness, it's just plain fun to take something else and repurpose it. If me and the family go riding, its always "what we taking". If its not very bad lands, usually the call is "the buggy" or "Golf cart" I love taking it to mud rides. I get a lot of WTH. Normally $20,000 side x sides asking a lot of questions. If anything deep, bad and ugly i'll take the 4x4 Rhino.

Absolutely. Go out and have fun! Most of the people we run into with the really expensive rigs avoid even the puddles.

One could maybe combine the best of both cart and atv? I have a different problem in using an atv or UTV in camprounds.. we visit music festivals and they allow gas carts...so a gas "cart" it is. The overall length of my creation is an off road disadvantage due to ground clearance. It otherwise works OK.

I agree with the LTV name. I take my cart many places where I should not, mostly rough desert race course and trails. Sometimes have to turn around where a rhino or atv would go right through but its whatever. We dont have room for a rhino and with real little kids we cant go fast and loose anyway so a built golf cart works just fine. Friends with utvs always want to drive the golf cart and all the kids beg all day long for rides in it plus mama thinks its perfect for where we are with the kids and all so she gave me the green light for more power. More power will make it a little more capable but it will never be a utv and thats just fine. The more people who have driven our cart now want one of their own. These things we build are just stupid fun!!
