Club car precedent 4 link!
 
I'm starting to build a 4 link setup for my lifted electric precedent. I really need some input from the suspension gurus. This is what I have so far. I've checked clearances and will have way more travel than I need.

I will be using polaris sportsman 700 shocks. They should be here next week. I'll post the measurements when they get here.

I along with a crew about 3 other guys have setup several single triangulated suspensions on jeeps/ crawlers.

Everytime we spent atleast a day on the cpu trying to get numbers right and then end up with a totally different number on the rig compared to the cpu. Normally, because we had to relocate brackets which made things longer or shorter.

Your uppers look a little short to me. Which imo will create some body roll issues. If I remember right (it's been a while), we tried to keep the lowers and uppers as close to the same length as possible.

I also noticed it looks like the center point of your triangle will be on the frame, we always did the point of the triangle on the axle and made the wide spot on the frame.

Our goal when setting up a 4 ling was this-
1- uppers and lowers at the same angle
2- try not to exceet 10 degree slope when sitting on flat ground (but not be flat).
3- keep everything as long as humanly possible.
4- keep everything as wide on the axle as possible (not the shocks, just the links).
5-I am no expert, and take my advice as a guy who has had his hand in a few jeeps after beer 30.

I just realized you have to the point of the triangle on the frame because there is a big honking motor in the way on the axle.....lol :thumbup:

Thanks for the info Rusty!

I've pretty much decided to just go for it and worry about perfecting later. I can always cut the mounts off and try again.

I have lowered the frame mount of the lower links it will put them at about 7 degrees.

I also increased the length of my uppers they are about 80% as long as the lowers.

No problem. One thing I learned building jeeps was everyone is an expert until you ask them to get their hands dirty!

Don't over think it, your going about it right. Mock everything up, tack it in place then play around with it. We always flexed them out, then after flexing them out get a couple hefties to stand on one side to get it to lean over. If everything looks good and nothing is binding then go ahead and get some welds on it. Put it together, take it for a spin, if it drives funny then adjust from there.


I meant to answer your question before on the anti squat.
Like I said before, it's been a few years and I am no expert, I am sure you can google around and find it. However, as far as anti squat goes. The farther apart your upper and lower control arms are the more your rig will want to raise up in the air when you take off or climb hills. If your bars are close together it will do the opposite. I think on the calculator you want that number lower, but like I said it's been years.
Also we learned it's not the end of the world if you goof up a little. One of the very first jeeps we built had too much gap in the links and liked to raise up when you would nose up to something, we put limiting straps on the center diff and it worked very well after that.

Made a little progress.

Could use some more input tho!

Test fit the shocks it's going to be tight.

I'm trying to think of a way to use the OEM shock mounts. Maybe by mounting a crossmember that would over hang the frame rails and attaching the shocks to it. I'd use .125in thick x 2in angle for the cross member. I dont know if the OEM mounts will be strong enough to support everything. Thoughts? They are aluminum and look to be about 1/4in thick.

My other idea is to make the red bracket. It would give me 3-4inches of adjustment up and down. I would bolt it to the frame with two 1/2in bolts going all the way through the frame rail.

Looking good!

I would go the route of making the red adjustable plate using the 1/2" though bolts.

Did a bit of tear down today and realized I cant mount the shock on the outside of the frame. It's actually leaning outward at about 3 degrees.

I found a pretty good article about shock angle.

I'm going to look at building a crossmember and angling the shocks inward at 20-25 degrees.

Hopefully this will help with the stiffness of the shocks too.

A little progress!

Cross member is built and installed.

I also got the passenger side shock installed.

I need to start on the passenger side links. I'm keeping the driver side connected with all the orginal components to help keep the axle located where it was originally. When I have the passenger side done I'll tear down the drivers side.
