4x4 gas cart ideas
Hello everyone, I haven’t been on here in a while, but I have a new idea I’ve been kicking around and wanted to see if anyone had any experience or thought on doing it. I have a gas golf cart. A 1990 ds and a Yamaha g16. The idea I’ve been thinking is 4x4 with an electric motor I guess you could say hybrid. I love having a gas fart because there are days we ride on out property all day for hours without stopping and the gas cart is what I’ve decided is best for me. I’d like to somehow create a hybrid that I could engage only the gas engine in rear wheel drive for driving distance and the front electric motor for campgrounds and hunting in the woods. And then possibility to use both in a 4x4 situation. I was thinking using the frond and off of a small 4x4 atv maybe. Any comments of thoughts to kick around the idea would be much appreciated. I’ve searched the forum and could find a thread on this type of build. Thanks everyone.

I've never had the need for 4wd with any of the carts. A stock G16, properly tuned, with the right clutch and tires, is a very capable off road cart. Positraction is an option for the G16. You've just got to know your limitations. |

Re: 4x4 gas cart ideas
Oh yeah they’re very capable. The idea of the 4x4 is more of a want of the option to go electric when I want to more so then wanting to have 4x4 capability. I know I could just wire up two complete system on a different ignition key separately to work the electric motor. I could figure out the electric side of getting everything to operate just not sure about the mechanical side of having the engine up front. I guess a similar set up to the front end of a bad boy buddy is what I’m thinking. Possibly finding one that someone is parting out and using the front end components could be an option

Re: 4x4 gas cart ideas
Certainly would be interesting!
Would need a controller, solenoid, MCOR/Pot box at the very minimum. Question really would be, where would you put all the batteries? Thinking you would have to go with lithium to get the volts needed and have a chance of having enough space to fit the batteries... Which takes you down the rabbit hole of a BMS and charger... I'm not trying to dissuade you. It would be a very cool project and one I would be very interested to see! Just trying to help with the trouble shooting of how one would make it happen. |

Re: 4x4 gas cart ideas
Personally, I would think it would hurt you more than it would help you. The ability to have 4wd would be nice, or being able to flip between electric and gas... however, the additional weight for the motor, axle, batteries, etc. would make for one incredibly heavy golf cart. I think you'd be better off picking up an electric beater for hunting purposes. they're dirt cheap in ragged shape with bad batteries, couple hundred bucks all day long. Just throw in a set of batteries and go and then you don't have to worry about aesthetics at all as it gets beat up in the woods.

This wouldn't be that hard. Look at bad boy buggies! You can pick one up dirt cheap and it would have everything you need. They are a hybrid from the OEM. They do have their short comings and you'll read all about it with a bit of research.

Re: 4x4 gas cart ideas
If you don't actually need 4WD it might be easier to rig up something where you can switch from gas to electric but use the transaxle for both.
My brother had a GM work truck with gas/electric drive. Electric mode was very stealthy and excellent for sneaking up on somebody and hitting the horn. I was pretty happy when he retired. |

Re: 4x4 gas cart ideas
How could you use the same axle and have both? Sounds interesting but can’t see it working in my head. The idea I’m imagining is basically a bad boy buddy front electric motor design without all the problems they have lol

Think "very good winch and large auxiliary battery". My very small contribution to the subject.
Your idea is novel but seems far fetched to achieve. |

Re: 4x4 gas cart ideas
Maybe some sort of jackshaft setup? More than one way to do it but here's a quick and crude spitball drawing. The cart would be on its way to becoming a Rube Goldberg machine but adding a 4WD front axle setup seems even more problematic.
