Jakes lift kit let me down!
I recently installed a
Jakes 5" lift kit on my 2004 EZGOand barely have 30 miles on it. When I was out road testing the cart today, the tie rod snapped as I was turning it around. Thankfully the lift kit failed at low speed or else it could have hurt!Jakes gets a lot of praise for quality but I dont see where its at. They go cheap on the long travel(improper use of heim joints, low quality coil overs) and cheap on their drop axles. IMO the drop axle kit should come with a longer tie rod because the lift kit axle is wider than the stock axle. Instead they have you adjust the short stock tie rod(drag link) all the way out to where there are almost no threads left. As proved on my cart this isnt a safe idea. Please tell me I am doing something wrong and they at Jakes aren't really expecting this to be acceptable. |

I think where people get the quality come from is their cast spindles. Yea, the cast spindles are nice but how do you know its high quality when you have nothing else to compare to.

How fast was you going? Where did it snap at the threads, or further toward the middle? Glad you didn't crack-up man. ... be careful

Re: Jakes lift kit let me down!
That would be great if I could get a longer tie rod! My other plan was to cut the stock one and weld in a sleeve.
Boris, looks like it broke right at the threads. I'm pretty sure I will have to dig the rest of the threads out of the rod end. I was making a u turn at 2-5 mph when there was a pop and the darn thing wouldn't steer. I'm glad it decided to fail then and not at 30 mph with other people around. I'll have to start buying all sports. I actually was strongly considering the allsports high 5" lift w/ new spindles, but I get the Jakes at whole sale. Hey scotty, what year is your workhorse? New or old style steering? |

Yeh, It is the old style and I see your is new. I too had run the ends out 2 inches on each side but it held driving through the dozer cuts at work (nothing rougher!) I dunno must be different on the old style! Mine is a year 2000
