What size shocks for rear coil over
help
Custom build cart with a rear swing arm type suspension. The motor will be mounted to the swing arm. will have rear coil overs . I bought some heavy duty coil springs rated at 400 lbs. Since the engine will be mounted to the swing arm, the shocks will only be carrying the frame weight and the weight of the driver/riders. I think these heavy duty ones will be way to stiff. At first I was thinking I needed these because of the engine, and now realize that the engine will be mounted to the axle/swing arm and not carried by the shocks at all. what shokcs should I use to get a good ride but stiff enough as not to collapse easy. |

Re: What size shocks for rear coil over
thx
I am thinking that some coil over shocks rated at 200 would be plenty of spring support. Bad thing is you do not know until its mounted and tested. |

Re: What size shocks for rear coil over
I have Koni coilovers on the back of mine and I run 90# springs, that gives me about 3 inches of compression during a launch. If you are going to use it for off roading you may want a little bigger spring but don't forget your swing arm setup will not have any side to side suspension on the back, your front suspension will, on a hard turn your outside front will compress and your inside rear will lift off the ground, you can get in a bind real fast like that.

A 3 link will fix that problem.

Re: What size shocks for rear coil over
I know that is a concern and why I need the correct shocks in the rear to allow for the rear suspension to compress some to compensate for that situation exactly.
Since the rear coil overs will only have to carry the frame weight and driver/rider, I was thinking that 200 lb rated ones will work fine if it is 200 per pair? Right now I am about to return a pair I ordered that are 400 rated and they sure seem really stiff! What I do not know is ... are the shocks rated per pair or individually .. I think its per pair but I really do not know? |

Re: What size shocks for rear coil over
I do not understand about the 3 link for the type rear suspension I fabbed. Surely it would be nice to be able to get the entire swing arm to move both up and down vertically and horizonally.
Is that even possible ??? Remember tht I have a MC engine sproket drive and it is mounted on the swing arm and the swing arm mounted to the axle so that the engine and rear axle move as one unit to avoid chan problems. Would love to have seen a swing arm unit with an engine mounted to it like mine rigged to move both ways. Any setups like that I would be very interested in, but I am almost done fabbing mine! Please xplain? |

Re: What size shocks for rear coil over
tci offers a 160 lb coil over. That seems a lil stiff, but if I mount them at 33 degress I am reduced to 110 lb... which seems about right?
Comments please? |

The above text on my post that u responded too was specific. Quoted... "tci offers a 160 lb coil over. That seems a lil stiff, but if I mount them at 33 degress I am reduced to 110 lb... which seems about right?". Your post was a waste of time to read.... but was funny. |
