ATV A-Arm lengthening project
Hi again Gentlemen, Haven't seen none of you in awhile ...... I have about a week until this college semester is over ....... until August ... (yeeee-YEEEE!)
I have some concerns and questions about the fabbing (lengthening) of the stock ATV A-Arms (with the discs) Right now the arms are about 8" from frame to spindle. (pretty similar to these in the pic below) minus the drums. OK old men .... here's the question? ...... How long are the a-arms themselves on the All Sports and the Stretch set-ups, and what would ya'll suggest as far as how much to add to these arms?............. I can always split the frame and widen it but I was concerned as to whether or not the longer arms make that much difference in the stability, and (or) the ride itself .... Being a starving student, and considering the prices of the All Sports and the Stretch set-ups ....... I'm going to have to make do with what I have. I borrowed the pic from AirJunky's thread .... ...http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/lifte...-ifs-cart.html |

Re: ATV A-Arm lengthening project
I will jump in and say mock up a set with card board and see
what you want in travel. Longer travel will cause more roll and you may be adding a sway bar. |

Re: ATV A-Arm lengthening project
Sorry Boris, just got back from the lake today,
I would modify your section of frame so the pivot/mounting points are as close as possible and make the A-arms as long as you can to keep the travel radius or arch as big as possible. You will need to use a coilover with a predetermind travel length to keep your steering aligned when the suspension cycles up and down or limiting straps. Longer A-arms will allow you to run a little softer spring because the distance between the coilover mounting point and the pivot point is greater than a shorter a-arm so the load ratio changes. |

Re: ATV A-Arm lengthening project
i dont know if it was your other thread or another guys but i answered all this like 3 days ago lol. it all depends on what your doing with the cart....longer arms and softer suspension are good for bumps but bad for hard cornering. you want a little camber lean in the corners so the tires bite well. There are SOOOOOO many variables to making suspension and you just have to mix and match them to get what you want. from coil weight to shock rebound to angle of the shock to lenth of the control arm and the pivot point to where your shock mounts to your control arm. all that changes everything else.
Im all for you giving it a shot...but its gonna take some research and some time to do. Why dont you tell us what you are generaly using your cart for and maybe we can help a bit. Mine is mainly just for running around my and my familys land (90 acres) and some trails between houses. and my front suspension is nice and soft for the bumps but plenty firm for the corners |

Re: ATV A-Arm lengthening project
Chud .... I'm probably not going to do alot of street driving, just trails ......... a couple of the obligatory mud-holes and. and a whole buttload of North Florida sugar-sand. I'd just rather the suspension give independently .... so I can go over pretty much anything (within reason) keep the tires on the ground ........ and the cart not want to get top heavy on a side to side tilt.
All that might be a bit much to ask for but I'm curious ..... and I have this front end that I "have" to put onto something ...... I can widen the thing out and keep the stock length arms, or I can narrow the center-frame and lengthen the arms ......I was just wondering what the length on the strech arms were as a basis to begin. Well that, and if the longer arms made that much difference in the ride |
