A big lift that would be
I'd love to build a huge lift, just for moderate running and screwing around (and looked cool). I might even gear it down 30mph would be more than enough. It would have HUGE tires on it.
Anyway, imagine this with a cart body on it, just a little wider and longer but not much: I don't do much mudding, so I don't know if I'd really need a 4x4 drivetrain. Would be nice in snow though, so I'd about need to do a quad conversion. I saw one guy here with the black cart that is near how big this would be, G1 I think. What would be the negatives other than slower steering/acceleration/compromised handling at speed/etc? I mean, I'd plan to drive it around just not get too wild with it. Would it need a rack to steer better or power steering? I would not use a stock engine, at least a 16hp which might not be enough to turn huge tires. Or would it be not that fun to drive? |

Re: A big lift that would be
No comments? I better find that guy with the huge black cart.
I'm not sure I'd go 4wd, that would be very involved and I just don't have that kind of use but for snow and doubt I'd run it that often in snow. However a cart with huge tires and wide, just high enough, I'm really thinking about. I want to build a whole suspension for it, with the large tires I can make it longer and fit two 16hp clones in it. The only unsolved issue I have with that build is I must have posi at least if not 4wd. Would have to get a trans that takes a posi or use something else and come up with a way to reverse it. I don't want a locked rear either as I'd be on lawns. |

Re: A big lift that would be
Those Cats are putting out at least 35 hp stock. Seems like retrofitting a cart body / frame to an ATV chassis would be the only way to pull it off.

Re: A big lift that would be
I know a guy with a small cat its not that fast, sure is a large quad though and might be enough for a cart. The old polaris was CVT but I see others have gone to it. I'd rather have that than gears, but it may depend on what one I found to buy cheap. A low range would be cool too. Would that make it worth the hassle? Would have a waterproof belt as well, or mostly so.

Re: A big lift that would be
I think it depends on what Cat your talking about.
I had a 650 V2 with the Kawasaki V-twin & CVT. The thing ran great, top speed of about 42 mph with 27" Mudlites on it. The weakest link on the quad was that CVT belt. I spun it a couple times. Had to be careful about doing anything very aggressive in reverse because of it. I ended up installing some better springs in the clutch to make it work a little better. Also had an AC 400 with a manual trans.... all Suzuki running gear. It didn't have a ton of power, but that trans was bullet proof. The last year or so I've been thinkin that I'd like to have a Honda 680 Rincon. Bullet proof, gear driven auto trans with low range, and the balls to back it up. |

Re: A big lift that would be
There are some upsides to running an ATV drivetrain. Far as waterproof mostly I only encounter big puddles and say less than 12" of water I don't drive into more than that. With the cart I have to be pretty careful. I know the old polaris would eventually get wet most of the time in deep water, and you could scorch the belt pulling things, I'd likely gear it lower if I could ~40mph is enough for me. It would need to go through deep snow if it were a 4x4, that would be tons of fun.
I might be thinking of two builds really; I might as well go cheap if I run huge tires and a tall lift because it will not be that good on the trail so I might as well not make it that capable. It would be more for show, cruising, a cool toy. On the other hand if I made it a 4x4 I would need to keep it wider and lower (relatively) because I would be climbing things/etc and need it to be more stable and trail capable. |
