Yamaha G8 build- 7" lift, 22's....
Hello all, I have been reading a while, but this is my first post. I have a 91 Yamaha G8 that I recently bought to use around the yard and for carrying my camera gear at car shows. It already has an aluminum work bed on it and runs great. Plans include the lift, governor bypass, a roof rack, and some HIDs for cruising around the lake at night.
Here is a picture of it: Here are the wheels/tires I bought for it: |

Sweeeet! I've never seen a G8 with headlights. Did you put those in? You'll have to join our G8 club, we are establishing on BGW! So far, we have 6 members! (It'll be a post in Gas Yamaha!) but us G8 owners are sticking together!!! Can't wait to see the lift and tires on it! Which lift did you go with?

What is the max tire size on a G8 with this lift? I ordered 22", but kinda wish I could fit larger ones. |

Re: Yamaha G8 build- 7" lift, 22's....
You should be able to fit 23's with the allsport (that's what they advertise), but the issue is the clearance between the rear tire and the rear mudflap/cross member. I have 22's on mine, and it was close until I added jakes heavy duty springs, which brought the rear much higher. If you put on a rear seat, or have a heavy load in your box, you'll want those springs anyway.
You may end up likeing your 22's, since the bigger the tire, the less power the cart has. I think 22's are just right for g8's. |

Well, the wheels and tires just came in, but the lift isnt scheduled for delivery until tomorrow. Then I have the fun of taking off the bed and top to get the rear cowl off.
Anyone have any tips? |

Like you said, take the rear cowl AND the front cowl off. Makes getting to everything much easier!

I got it all naked:
Then bypassed the governor. I added a little bracket to stretch the spring for more tension: And the wheels/tires: |

Those tires and wheels are going to look good on the cart.

I got the front installed- it was a PITA figuring out how to get the spindles off, I ended up using some old drill bits to drive out the roll pins.
I ran into a problem with the rear though. I attempted to align the shock with the lowered mount and the shock broke clean off of the lower mount spilling oil all over the floor. What am I supposed to do about the shock alignment? This shows the shock problem: and this is what happened when I tried to move it to the upper mount: |

Re: Yamaha G8 build- 7" lift, 22's....
Yep. I did close to the same thing, but didn't brake it, just cracked it. It broke like three weeks later with 5 people on the back!
Well, now you need to order the Jakes heavy duty shocks/springs. Don't bother trying to put anything else on, and don't bother trying to find a G8 shock to replace it with. I've been here, done this just last month! But, read this entire thread before you start!!!! (You'll need to contact Jakes first and tell them you need bigger bushings) http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-y...-question.html Just order the Jakes and be done with it!! http://www.jakesliftkits.com/liftkit...aha-g2-g9/7251 When you go to install them, you'll lift the body of the cart (not the engine cradle) up high. Like way high for the 22's... Only put the bottom of the shock about 1/4 of the way down the mounted bolt. Only enough to get the nut on. Then drop your jack until the top bolts match up with your lift holes. Be careful not to force them (as you found out). Get the bolts and nuts on the top two shocks and tighten them. Then tighten the lower nuts with a socket, NOT an air wrench!!! If your threads are not lined up, you dont want to ruin your bolts down there! Tighten them all the way, then let off your jack. I've done this the wrong way about 5 times, and the right way twice. Much easier! Hey, you should join our G8 club we got going on!! - http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-y...ease-post.html |
