6.5" Grade 8 Bolt - WTF?
This is just a rant...
Who knew that a 6.5" bolt would be so hard to find? I've been to 4 hardware stores and even called Fasten-All. It can be special ordered for a fee. No one even carries it in a grade-5. The U-bolts that came with my lift kit are not long enough to accomodate my beefed up HD rear springs - they work, but I can not put the washers on and the nuts are not on as far as I would like them to be. U-Bolts are not necessary in my application since the bottom plate is welded to the axle. I've been trying to fix this for some time, and with some added HP about to go to the rear wheels, I need to be sure my rear end is not going to have any problems. I could use a 7" with additional washers, but I don't like to "rig" things like that. Order placed... |

Re: 6.5" Grade 8 Bolt - WTF?
Been there, done that! I know exactly what you mean! I hate having to use washers or spacers when just being able to get the right size bolt would have been so much easier. I have gotten them too long, cut them off, and threaded where I needed to. We have a dedicated fasteners company near by, but they now are not being able to keep everything in stock because of our lousy economy. They can still order stuff for you, but that's a pain and you usually have to wait 2 or 3 days to get it. A quote from the Red Green Show, " We're all in this together! "

Why not thread a nut on to 6", cut a 1/2 " off, thread nut off to make bolt workable?

Mc Master has them, and you'll have it with-in 3 days You can also use threaded rod and cut to length. If you want it hardened, use B7 threaded rod. I use a nut on one end and center punch it in 4 spots to lock the nut on the rod. That becomes the "head" of the bolt. |

Standard bolts go to 1" increments after 6",Thats why they are special-order in 1/2" increments over 6".Get a 7" long, thread a nut on it,cut it down to 6-1/2",and run a Threading-Die down it if you need more thread.
