Default Tire size/ Gear Ratio/ MPH

I have a lot of really steep hill's around where I live. Here's the question, I put 23 inch tires on when I rebuilt my cart with plowman's belt, torque spring and rear clutch with the sheave machined so it will close more, I also rejeted the carb and added the lifetime free flowing air filter. Lets say it will run 25 to 27 mph and it's weight is 950 lbs add 2 people say 525 lbs. It pulls all right but I would like it to pull up hills faster and maybe not as fast on level ground.

If I went to the lower gears how much speed would I loose on level ground and how much faster would it pull the hills or would it even be any faster on the hill's or just pull them better. It's hard to put what I want to know into words if you don't understand just ask, I'll try to answer it. By the way I have a 2001 G 20 Yamaha with a 295cc gas engine.

Thanks, LURCH!!!!!!

Do you know all the parts you have installed now are working like they should? If you go to a lower gear you would climb those hills much better. The top end would drop though. How much is a guesstment but I'd say 5MPH or more. Then again on a gas it may not make as big of differance as it does on a electric.

Thats about where I'd put it also 5 mph loss. Since I ride it on the road a lot I really don't want to loose the mph but these darn hill's around here is something else.
It climbs steep hills at about 8 to 10 mph now, if I could pick up a little on the hills it would be worth loosing some top end.

I'd really think about a big block kit. You'll gain about 10 horsepower if you go with a 23 hp kit. They are expensive, but your cart looks like it's worth the bucks. Or you can go the "clone" route and fab up the engine yourself.

You're going to have some time and material in the gears and while you will gain more low end grunt, you'll lose that top end power and speed.

Good point, I could take the 400 bucks or so for the gear and save up enough over the next year to do a big block next winter. Thanks for the reply.

i just big blocked my cart. i do some serious trail riding with a few other members on here at a atv park that has some steep hills. with the big block i have both speed and torque. going up hills with the big block is way easier than it was with my stock motor. i think only one hill bogged my engine down just a little and that hill is steep enough that walking up it would take the wind right out of you if you could even walk up it.

That's cool blake80, I'll start saving my pennies and when I run across a good deal in an engine I'll be set. Next question what would be the smallest engine you would use 16/18 or 24/26 just saying if you are going to go big block go Big Block!!!!!
Other than mounting what will I run into out of the ordinary with my cart?

The 24/26 have more torque and more performance options. I build a 18hp briggs. I used CPP's rev kit, cam, and thinner head gaskets. I pulled the governor also. I also had tons of support and help from a lot of guys on here. But as far as which engine, depends on what you can find and or afford. Tom's kits are the easiest to do. I've installed one of his kits and it is very easy and a very nice kit

You can use this speed calculator to determine your rpm vs gear ratio vs speed.
