Dangers of Steering Wheel Removal
I have seen similar posts, but another saftey warning is in order.
I have been beating, prying, wedging, and cussing at my club car steering wheel for days trying to remove it. My wife has been in the garage tugging and pulling as I tried to beat it into submission. Everytime shes out there, I warn her about it coming off and hitting her, or letting her fall over backwards or whatever bad thing might happen. She always said she was OK, just hit it! Last night we left the loosened nut on the shaft, as we began the nightly pounding. She swore the nut was holding it on and removed it. Since I was convinced that it was NEVER coming off, I whacked it with a hammer as she stood on the floorboard pulling. Long story short, it came off, and came off quickly! I have the body off this cart, so she pitched backwards across the frame and exposed engine on her way to the garage floor. Luckily, she was not injured other than some scrapes, bruises, punctures, and a knot on her head. The story is actually pretty funny, since the injuries were minor, and I only wish I had it on film, but it could have turned out much worse, with an expensive trip to the ER. ALWAYS leave the nut on the column when your pulling at these stuck steering wheels. They let go when you least expect it. Mark |

Re: Dangers of Steering Wheel Removal
Thanks. At least that wheel is off!! It's been holding things up. I have a whole lot of parts waiting to go on. Just hoping to get it finished now so I can post a picture.

Re: Dangers of Steering Wheel Removal
Why not spend the $20 for a puller and not take the chance? They come in handy for more than just steering wheels.

Yep, getting moving that fast doesn't hurt but the landing might
Had a friend of mine pulling a nail out of a baseboard and it let go. She went straight backwards, sat down on the toilet and snapped the base right off the floor.. |

Re: Dangers of Steering Wheel Removal
I think it's all her fault, anyway. This was an 88 CC that came with the house we just bought. It was not a pretty cart by any means. It was basically yard junk that the cats used as a bed.(the cats came with the house, too. Or maybe they came with the cart) But it did run. She ran it over the hill once because there were no brakes, and demanded that I fix them. Well, I didn't even know about this world of golf carts until I went looking for "her" brakes.
Y'all know how it goes from there...well, if I need brake shoes, I should also replace the drums. Since the old rusted wheels and worn tires are off, I could get nicer ones. Why buy 8 inch wheels, when the bigger ones are about the same price. If I get the bigger wheels, then I need the lift kit. The body really needs work, and the cats have destroyed the seats. I better get brush guards to protect the new body work. Well, about all that is left is this old steering wheel.....honey, pull here while I whack it with this sledge hammer. She's pretty much healed, and is VERY excited to see something other than the UPS man, piles of parts, and blood. I'd say I'm almost done, but I do hear that V-twin calling my name. I hope to post some pictures soon. Mark |
