Which elec cart is best for a hunting rig?
1st off, Im new here BUT I did read alot of threads 1st but I didnt seem to get some definate answers. I live in SW Florida, no hills, just lots of standing water and such. I want to go buy an electric cart somewhere off craigslist for about 1k or so and then do the lift and tires, ..I think I want to go 48v, Im leaning towards a club car because of the aluminum frame, (everything rusts here due to the humidity).. I want torque over top-end speed. I just dont want to buy the wrong cart. Any certain year models better than others? Traction is also very important, as far as miles per charge, im flexible on that, not going to go 30 miles a day or anything like that..I think an a-arm lift would be better than a spindle lift but Im not sure, I didnt find a thread on that issue here either. Im mechanically inclined so I would be doing all the wrenching myself, thats the whole point right! Make it "your own"? Im not sure what a "series" cart is either..please excuse my ignorance..I dont want to make any avoidable mistakes. I will post the build up when I start though, Thanks for ALL your help! -Jeff in Florida

Re: Which elec cart is best for a hunting rig?
I used Ezgo carts because of availability. I hunt these carts pretty hard, and I used a long travel lift. after a year of use, I am changing my preference. I am going to build my own lifts or try a spindle lift. The long travel rode great but now is making too much noise. When you have moving parts you are going to have some noise, so I going away from the long travel. If you cannot fabricate your own racks, definately look at Outback fabricators, they are sponsors here. I can fab my own, but am going with Outback on my next carts. I would recommend Scottyb's cables, and upgrade pakages.

Re: Which elec cart is best for a hunting rig?
I like the Club Car DS. As you said, Aluminum frame, and it goes all the way to the front like a truck which makes it almost stupid easy to mount a winch to. If your hunting and running around offroad, you will need a winch. EZ-GO not so easy to mount a winch to. Not with out a lot of stuff to buy and bolt on. I built my winch mount out of a piece of I-beam and use it all the time to hoist my deer up while skinning, pull the buggy out of the mud if needed, load on trailer if batts get to low, etc, etc. You get the picture. Here's a picture of the front of mine.
Notice the I-beam behind the bumper. It's mounted directly to the front of the frame, winch sits on top of I-beam. You could fab an upper bumper like I did or just leave it with the winch exposed, your choice. Got winch at Harbor Freight for $50. Best thing I ever did. All other materials cost me $00.00. The lift is a 6" Jakes spindle lift from Buggies Unlimited. I really like it. Good luck. |

Re: Which elec cart is best for a hunting rig?
How is the traction on your club car? are ez-go's any better in soft stuff? Since I cant do the whole 4x4 conversion, I want to make sure it hooks up prettyy well in the slick stuff. For sure Ill go either club car or ez go, just gotta find the deal on craigslist. Some people are just NUTS on what they want for a 7-8 year old plain jane cart..lol!

Re: Which elec cart is best for a hunting rig?
I just finished my Second Club Car build with Hunting the main focus. I would highly recommend CC for the aluminum frame. Go with a series motor only and with a controller upgrade, the torque is SICK!!! Here is my thread.

It doesn't have 4 wheel drive, just a long travel All Sports front suspension. Shouldn't need 4 wheel drive with the winch set up. I am not sure the years, This is a '96.
