Default Snow plow build

This site should have a "Crazy hair brained idea" section in it.

So I've seen & read all the snow plow threads in here & various other ideas. And I finally think I have a collection of ideas I can use to put together a snow plow. Starting now I might even have it ready to push snow around by the time it falls.

So first idea is the blade itself. These carts being what they are, I figured it should be light weight. So I'm making the blade out of a 55 gallon plastic barrel.... like the kind of thing that cooking oil is delivered to a restaurant. Picked one up for $10 on CL over the weekend. Looking at it, I will be able to cut it into 3rds, and use two sections to make a 55" wide blade.... which is about 3" wider than my own cart's track. The 3rd section.... well, how about a side mounted blade in addition to the one in front? And this thing being white plastic, it won't need any kind of wear bar on the bottom at all.

Next is the arm that connects the blade to the cart. As I see it, it needs two swivels, one to adjust the angle, the other as a breakaway in case I hit a curb or something. I think this one has them both & it's a simple enough design I should be able to cut & weld it up without too much trouble. I'll add a couple of springs to keep it upright, maybe an angle iron side support & a couple of trailer hitch quick release pins so it's easy to adjust..... it should be all good.

I already have a winch on the cart & will use that to lift/lower the blade. I'll have to get my butt out of the cart to do angle adjustments.

Biggest issue I have at the moment is how to connect the arm to the bottom of the cart. I have a couple of ideas and am kicking around what I think will work. The issue I have is that I don't want to leave this thing attached to the cart all winter long. I'd put it on whenever I wanted to use it. Then I'd hope to cut it lose when I wanted to use the cart without it.

Love to hear what others suggest or have to say about it. If you think these carts aren't going to be capable of pushing snow, then check this out. Granted it has it's limitations, but then again, I don't live in Alaska either.

Just a quick thought. How about getting a reciever hitch tube and mounting it under the winch and get some 2" square tubing and mounting the blade to it? That was just off the top of my head.

I have a old plow rig laying around off a old lawn tractor I had. It has a shaft on it to adjust the angle on it with out getting of the tractor. I will see about getting some pictures of it and post for you in the next couple of days.

Looks good! Should work well.

I made my own as well but I had a craftsman plow to start with and made my own frame, bolted them together and the things works great!

Here is a video of mine pushing a pretty good fall.

Take a look at some ATV snow blade frame mounts, should give you a good idea. You'll need to mount the blade frame to the front and mid way back of the cart frame so if you do hit something the whole cart frame absorbs the shock and not brake.

Right on, R8cer. Thats exactly what I have in mind. I think a little left angle in your blade would do you a lot of good.

The issue I have is that my cart already has a Terra Toys IFS on it. It's wide, and I'll need to work around it on whatever I do here. That means the arm will need to sit fairly low, too low to want to drive around much with it on the cart if I'm not plowing. Plus I'd want it wider than the cart's tire print. Most ATV plows are 48" wide. This will be like 55". But being a plastic blade with a steel frame, it should still be pretty lightweight.

LC92, the shaft you mention sounds like some kind of hydraulic ram. Would make it easier but might get costly. Definitely something I could add at any point.

El Camino, I'm checking ATV installs now. Found one that used a bracket I thought I could build. It was a piece of flat bar welded lengthwise to a pipe. The flat bar is bolted to the cart frame. The pipe is like a hinge, with a pin thru it to hold the plow in place.

But then it dawned on me that I could have a piece of steel going thru the cart interior, on top of the floor. With the hinge piece underneath the floor. And then big bolts securing the two together at each end, maybe one in the middle too. I could use thumbscrews on there & it would be easy to add/remove anytime I wanted to.

Heres a basic sketch of the idea. Hope I got the point across. Basically the cart is sandwiched between the two pieces. Would require almost no mod to the cart, maybe a hole in the middle.

No this one is not Hyd, it is a shaft/arm that went along the side side the tractor and was operated by hand. I will get some pictures for you.

I can angle the blade by hand. I have an actuator to angle it side to side I just haven't gotten around to installing it yet.
