Mounting Tires
Ok, I have four offset 8" wheels arriving this week and I already have four 22" Carlisle Field Trax tires waiting for them. I have lots of tools in my garage and was wondering how hard it is to mount these myself. If I can't, I have to pay at least $40 for a shop to do it ($10 per tire is the cheapest I've found). Anyone?

Re: Mounting Tires
If you have a Harbor Freight locally,go there and get 2 tire-bars(they are about 2' long,1" wide, cost about $7 each)They are a life-saver.If not,a set of prybars work decent.Spray the beads with WD-40,Spray-Silicone or rub a little dish-soap on them.Don't use grease, oil or PB-Blaster,they deteriorate rubber. The tires need to go on from one side of the rim, place the rim on the floor(on cardboard,carpet,etc..to keep from scratching it on the floor)The side with a smaller area from the lip, down towards the center should be up.(on a 2"/5" offset the backside will be up).Lube the beads of the tire, then tilt the tire on an angle over the rim, start pushing it over the rim. When it stops, then insert the bar and work the tire around the rim,be careful not to pinch the bead and tear it.After the first bead drops over, repeat for the second bead. You will start to get the bead to lock over, then it will try to pop out following you around, lock it in place with 1 bar, continue to feed the rest around with the other bar, watch the bar doesn't pop and smack you in the face!Take your time, don't get frustrated,if its' not going good, get help or take them somewhere before you ruin a tire.Hope this helps

Re: Mounting Tires
HF also sells a small tire changer. If you do this that often, spend the $ and buy one.. Other wise the bars will work and as you are working your way around if you can push the bead to the center it will give more clearance to get the rest of the bead over the rim. And extra bodies help.. Trying to hold the blasted thing while putting a crow bar on it can get a little tough..

Re: Mounting Tires
Oh and if you have children, send them in the house because there may be some language they shouldn't hear..

Re: Mounting Tires
I'd pay the $40. I despise dealing with tires.

Re: Mounting Tires
I've done tires since I was a Kid(41 now)so they are nothing for me,I was in the garage one nite 2yrs. ago,and kept hearing the "Clang"of tire-bars at my Wifes' Brothers House.I walked over,he was fighting with 1-tire(22x11-8 Trail-Pro)for over an hour.I looked and he had it going the wrong way on the rim,I told him to flip it,he argued that thats how he does them, and they are always a fight, but thats how they are!!So I took the bars away from him, popped the tire off, flipped the rim,and shoved the tire on in about 1-minute flat!He let me do the rest of them,I commented on his tire-bars(the Harbor Freight ones!!)the next day he brought me 2-bars!!!

Re: Mounting Tires
hmmmm.... I may have just learned something. I must admit I have never looked at a rim to see if one side has a deeper bead surface... thanks pachanga90

Re: Mounting Tires
Its' called a "Drop-Center"If you look at any rim, there is always a long-side and a short-side(inside where the tire goes)If you try to force the tire on from the long-side,you can't flex it enough to get the second bead on.

Re: Mounting Tires
I disagree,I've done tons of 8" wheels over the years, between carts,Wheelers,Mini-Sprints,and trailers, and never really had that much trouble with any of them.But..I've also done Heavy Truck tires since the early 90s'(By Hand!),so I guess they aren't that much of a challenge to me.You want to see a bear of a tire to mount?Try those 255/70-22.5s' that guys are running on Duallys' because they think they look cool(They weigh a ton,and are so **** stiff, that we had 3-blasters on a set once to seat the beads!!!
