Marine stereo recommendation.
Looking for some brand names/models on marine stereos. I've been looking online and am leaning towards a Sony at the moment.

Re: Marine stereo recommendation.
I have always used non marine stereos in the carts, but I also use a weatherproof flip cover to keep water out. I usually purchase the $80-$100 sony, jvc from wally world and they last 2-3 years and if have problems go and buy same one and the harness is the same. The sony marine radio that came in my boat new had a thick clear plastic on the top of the radio and a radio installer that put a system behind that radio said that the plastic cover was what made it marine. I only got 2 years out of the marine radio. If it is covered I would save money and not use marine.

I use non marine as well. I stick with Kenwood though for the same reasons that Craig sticks with the sony/jvc. Ease of install if there is an issue.

I am also a Kenwood guy, but for the latest I did purchase a marine radio, the 350 I think, but don't quote me on that. With a set of Polk 6.5 speakers under $150 to my door (I think 135-140?). I think I ended up getting them both on Amazon.

Re: Marine stereo recommendation.
Many of the marine rated audio components have special coatings on the circuit boards as an added level of protection inside the unit. I have a pretty loud stereo (4 full range speakers and two sub woofers) on my kayak so I've done my homework. My whole system has been under water, save the two marine amplifiers in the dry hold of the boat, which is relatively sealed from the wet stuff. My marine speakers (MB Quart) and subs (Kicker) have been completely under water (and I could still hear them playing). You may consider what I've done, which is simply get a marine amplifier, marine speakers, and use an MP3 player for audio source. This gives you the ability to play MP3's and most if not all of them have some sort of built in FM tuner. I keep mine in a special dry bag made for mp3 players. It would be relatively easy to run the audio jack to a glove box or cup holder, or even get a dash holder for it. Plus, you can remotely mount the amplifier, doing away with the need for mounting a head unit somewhere in the dash.

Re: Marine stereo recommendation.
I have a non marine Dual mech-less head unit on the that has been working for over 3 years with just the standard fairing door protecting it. The marine grade Duel mech less head unit I have on the boat only worked for 2 months before it stopped working.

Re: Marine stereo recommendation.
Agree with everyone else. Unless it is going to be a saltwater fishing boat, regular stereo and waterproof cover will work well, and you will still have all the features for a much cheaper price.

Re: Marine stereo recommendation.
Even if you go with a marine deck, you still need to be careful not to expose it to water. I have an Alpine 9886, Kenwood 550U and 350U in 3 different carts with the marine covers. I've had my carts covered in mud and packed with snow. I'm very careful when I clean them. Never an issue.
