Default 2000 pound winch enough?

I had almost decided that I was not going to put a winch on the cart, BUT, the Harbor Freight circular has their 2000 pound winch on sale for $49, and with a super coupon, may be too good to pass up.

Anyone had any trouble or see any trouble with the size? I don't plan on burying the cart, more for soft mud, and actual use around the house to pull limbs or other things.

Last month they had the 5000 pound for $150, and I could not make myself NEED it, but for under $50 I might NEED one.....

I would think a 2000 lb winch would be fine. And that's a great price. I really like Harbor Freight! My wife cringes every time I even mention going there. No one in my family other than my father in law will step foot in that place with me. It's a minimum of three hours and 200 dollars each visit.

Thats the winch I have on my cart. I've used it to pull the cart up on a snowy trailer, pulled a 1200 lb iron firepit about 20' into place on a deep sandy beach, and recently I used it to pull a 450 lb Precor elliptical up a snow covered hillside. The last one was a riot.... used 2 sheets of plywood & the winch to move the machine from the driveway into the back door of the house, with about 4" of snow everywhere.

I also have a snatchblock in case I think I'm exceeding what the winch can do, although I've never used it. And I'm thinking about replacing the cable with rope, just easier to handle without gloves, binds less, and if it ever broke, less chance of it snapping back & hitting something (or someone!).

I have this same winch on my K-zoo Truck, which is a tank. And to be honest I've never used a snatch block on it, mostly because I don't have one, but I have burried the K-zoo in ground with that little winch being my saving grace. My only gripe is the slower than slow retracting speed, and the cheapy controller, but it makes up for it in oompf. I say get it, you just never know when you'll be miles out with no one else and you're stuck.

2000 lbs should be fine. This is a video of a 2000 lbs winch with our new winch mount on an Electric EZGO and it pulls it off the ground. http://www.youtube.com/user/jakesliftkits?feature=mhum

I'm against em. I had several (more than 3) of them on my service trailer. I used them to drag dead carts on the trailer.... Sometimes they had flat tires too. I kept burning them up, I would go with the next step up.

The general rule of thumb is a line pull rating of twice what you intend to pull. I have a 3k winch on my cart.

Thats what I've heard too. But my cart is probably a few hundred pounds shy of 1500 lbs too.

I think the ratings are for aired up tires on flat asphalt pavement
