widening rims
I decided to widen a set of 10x6" steel wheels for my cart.To save cash for tires this is my best option to get rims anytime soon.So I took a Metabo and cut them in half and discarded the center which was a 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern.
I rolled some 10 gauge to widen the rims to 8".I squared them all up and welded them solid.Filled in the valve stem hole and drilled it in the center.I am actually running the rims in a reverse dish pattern like the old hot rod trick. I layed out a new center section out of 1/4" .hole sawed the center pilot hole.I punched the bolt pattern in the iron worker and chamfered the holes. I had a friend chuck up a front hub in a lathe from the cart and bolt the center to it and trim the O.D. to the size needed to push it back into the rim. I made a 3" spacer to clamp everything to the fab table to keep the rim and center square with each other. One done and now 3 left to go. |

Re: widening rims
I know wheels are not that overly exspensive and that was not the big reason for doing this.I just wanted to do it.I love fabricating and welding so this was just playing.
These last pics are after tons of sanding and throwing some primer onto them.I think they will end up flat black with red pinstripe around the wheel lip. |

Nice job! Fabricating can be very satisfying.

Re: widening rims
When you do something like this, do you have any balance problem?

Re: widening rims
Honestly, unless the center wasn't square, you would never notice anything else.Especially if you run ATV-type tires. They flex so much when running, that they are constantly out of balance anyway. As long as the section is done properly, and the center-plate is centered, theres' no reason that they can't be as good,if not better than a factory-made wheel. We had 2 companies here for years that widened Auto/Truck wheels(I think 1 might still be around). They did them so cheap it was crazy, and they made a living at it.

Re: widening rims
I would bet that they have to be balanced. I have only seen it done to farm tractor wheels with a piece of natural gas line. On something fast you might feel a little shake if you run pavement and harder tires. Speaking of coarse from someone that only drives on pavement with my cart.
