Yamaha shock options
So I've had the Jake's 6" lift on my G1 for a few months and am pleased with it. I added some drop plates to the front to drop the arms down some and also widen the front 4". No changes to the rear aside from Jakes parts.
After adding the alternator, whenever I get two decent sized guys on it, every little bump makes the alternator bottom out on the body of the cart. So, I need to get another inch out of the rear. These stock G1 springs are either tired, or just too soft to begin with because just one person sitting on the back makes it squat about 1". If I were to add a rear seat, I would probably be draggin the bumper on the ground I know plenty of guys have been using Honda 300ex shocks for all of their lift in the rear, but that would just eliminate my Jakes parts and give me the same amount of lift, which then I would need to fab up some bracket to get the extra 1" I am looking for. FINALLY TO THE QUESTION!!! Are there any stiffer shock options out there that anyone knows of that is 1" taller than stock G1 rear shocks? Sorry for the long post, just like to be thorough. |

Re: Yamaha shock options
I know a G2/9 shock you can get a new spring from McMasters, it is posted here someplace. It will rider harder. My lift is adjustable and I just moved it down softer. It sinks about 2" when I stand on the rear bumper and it still rides hard offroad but not as bad....with stock G9 shocks. Some use 400ex shocks, not knowing size.

Re: Yamaha shock options
Thanks, Sho.
Ive got a buddy that works at the local atv retailer and I need to see what they have "laying around" over there I may look into some of those adjustable shocks for atvs. I like a softer ride, but too soft, and I cant haul more than one person around without clearance issues.....maybe I just need a 10" lift! |

400ex front shocks are a little longer than 19". I used some Suzuki Eiger 400 rear shocks (it runs two) on my g2 and it rode 100 percent better than stock. Stock shocks are pos for anything other than a stock cart in my opinion. Any shock you go with just make sure it has preload adjustments. The Eiger shocks didn't have preload but since they were designed for a utility atv they could carry a decent load without preload adjustments.

Suzuki Vinson 500 rear shocks are the same as the Eiger shocks...but they have preload adjustments. You can find them on ebay sometimes.

Re: Yamaha shock options
If you want a good ride, yeah I would look at some other shock rather than beefing up a stock one. I was going to try to engineer a bar that flipped down and locked with the stock shocks on it, make it so I could lock the stock shocks down to haul stuff, and normally they would do nothing and some other soft quality shocks would be there for trail riding.

Thanks for the info guys!
I ordered some on ebay yesterday, but didn't really mean to. OH wellll. If they don't work, I'll just save em for another project |

Re: Yamaha shock options
Here is what I got:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/400303512371...84.m1439.l2649 They are actually stiffer than I thought they were going to be, just jumping on the back of it. Body is still in the paint booth, so I won't know until I actually get to ride it. However, I did get right at 1 1/2" of added lift in the rear that I needed to clear the alternator when the suspension flexes. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase I'll post pics in my build thread |
