Larger tires now it's very hard to steer....help??
I have a Yamaha G19 that I installed an Allsports 7" double A-Arm lift with a set of Carlisle All trail 23x10.5x12 tires. During the install i put new complete tie rods on as well (ball joints included). My question is when I have to turn the wheels under extremely low speed (almost stationary) it is very hard and requires 2 hands, however once I am rolling obviously it is much easier. Does this seem right, should it be that hard when i am just sitting there????? I drove a G2 with 22" tires that were very aggressive tread (much smaller contact patch) and when I was stationary I could turn it with one hand.

Re: Larger tires now it's very hard to steer....help??
Dumb question but did you grease your new tie rods and ball joints? I'm sure you did but it's the first place to look. Try laying under the cart while someone else turns the wheel and see if you can see anything binding up.
I have 23's on my Club Car and don't have any issue turning the wheel while stationary. This isn't a result of the tires, it's something in your steering system. Since you just replaced tie rod's that's where I'd start looking. |

My G 20 is the same way with a Jakes Double A arm long travel. I've been told but haven't got to check it, the caster or camber which ever is front to back.
If you find that it is anything different please let us know. |

Sounds like something is binding. Check all the rod ends, ball joints, and pivot points for grease. And yes the caster can have an effect on steering input effort, but if everything is free and greased it should still be tolerable. I'm guessing there is a bolt/nut that is dragging on a rod end or something mechanical like that. Check every new connection in the steering. Have someone cycle the steering while you watch what's going on.

Quote:
Caster is the front to back adjustement (easy to remember if you think of a the way a caster wheel is mounted to a garbage can or a shopping cart). It's true that excessive caster can effect steering response but for it to make it as hard to turn as the OP is describing I think it would have to be way, way out of whack. |

Is there a block that fits under the bracket that attaches to spindle to compensate for the lift in the stearing system?? That block may be hitting your spingle. There usually is a machined edge that goes against the spindle.

Re: Larger tires now it's very hard to steer....help??
i know I dont have a double a arm lift like you but i have the 6" jakes spindle lift onmy g29..it wa easy to steer when i purchased the cart from the dealer but started to squeek from time to time when turning...so i got out the pistol grip grease gun and pumped 25 pumps of grease into each spindle.the spindles had to have been bone dry when the dealer installed the jakes. I pumped until just a tiny bit of grease oozed out around the bottom. NOw after greasing the steering is stupid easy to turn. I have a power steering polaris rzr and this cart is easier to steer than the rzr with power steering.. just a thought to check the grease

Re: Larger tires now it's very hard to steer....help??
Called Jakes today and they said that it was normal for the steering to be hard because of the extension on the arm coming off of the steering box down to the tie rods or what ever they are called and the fact of mine being a limo and heavy. The cast piece that bolts on with U-bolts. He said if I changed it to a rack it would steer easier, so I guess I'll start checking on parts to change it over.
