Sandy trails and electric golf carts don't mix
Well as you know just got done lifting my 94 DS 36v with the Jakes 6" lift and slapped some 10" off road tires on it. All was going good cruising around the neighborhood. Then I remembered this trail in the back of our neighborhood that leads out to the nature dunes and such. So figured why not take a little off road trip with the family. Went up the hill and down the hill and on to the sandy service road trail. All was going good , other then fact cart was slowing down to crawl at full speed at times. I thought that was normal on softer sand so as we went further down this trial in middle of nowhere my wife like " this is not a good idea maybe we should turn back". I was like "no were ok let's see where this trail takes us". All sudden started smelling something burning. Opened up the battery compartment. The negative battery terminal was smoking and melted. Along with almost every negative post that melted right through. As I touched it the main negative post broke off. We were stuck!!! Almost a mile off the pavement in sandy and hilly dune area. All 4 batteries were shot (hole right at the posts) . Argggg!! We pushed it down the trail for a qtr mile but gave up and found a fence that led to a neighborhood and climbed it and got a ride back home from nice strangers. At home had to find someone with four wheeler to get on the trail but neighbor with 4x4 jeep helps out and we pulled the cart back home. Looks like I'll be replacing 2 year old batteries sooner then later now. Argh.
Here is trail when we left it near dark as I was getting a tow back home (this time not so proud as I was before when I was cruising down the neighborhood before the trail that we got on two hours ago. Getting towed off trail: Damage: So now what?? |

Now I'm wondering if I can fix the batteries or if I have to replace all of them and perhaps now is time to think about 48v instead of 36v. |

Re: Sandy trails and electric golf carts don't mix
Your meltdowns were more than likely caused by the constant heavy load being placed on the cart by the terrain. You need some drivetrain UPGRADES to match your lift and tires.
How much money you got? |

Re: Sandy trails and electric golf carts don't mix
Not enough ($$)! I was so proud I was able to get the upgradees done myself and save money now this battery thing is gonna kill me. Ok so here are my choices. Please let me know what you think.(pros and cons)
A) See if I can fix battery posts and hope I can ride them out for a while longer. Wonder what that cost or can I do it myself. B) buy 8v batteries and swap out solenoid and run the car on 48v. Have to buy a new charger I guess as well. Not sure I can afford another $500 to go to solid state just yet. C) stay 36v for now by buying new batteries. Do 6v batteries cost much less then 8v? |

You can not go 48v without changing out everything I listed above.

Re: Sandy trails and electric golf carts don't mix
Dang really?? Could of swear I read a post where guys don't swap frs and controllers.
Anyways in search of 48v parts on Cregslist tonight I cam across this : Like New GE Model D-377 High Speed Electric Club Car Motor/ Speeds to 22 MPH on 48Volt. 10 Tooth Female Spline 48V, 4.7 HP, 4200 RPM. Use with Standard 225 AMP Controller Only used 2months. $200.00 Would this be a better motor then using my 36v stock motor with 48v?? I guess question is will a high speed 48v motor offer more performance then a 36v motor on 48v cart as most rave about |

You can not run 48v thru a 36v system anymore than you can load the family up in a stock cart with big tires and head out across the everglades with good results. You should start being more selective about the advice you take. |
