Tire, wheel, and lift kit question for build
With the help of ScottyB, I am rebuilding a 1993 Club Car into a hunting buggy. First step - conversion to solid state from resistor. I went with the 700amp FSIP(GE) Controller and 400amp Super Duty 1000a peak Solenoid Kit. Cart will eventually be a 48v cart (8 six volts) for the longest possible range I can get.
My questions, for which I flogged the search engines for answers, but haven't been able to find one, is this: Why do I need six inches of lift on a lift kit? Seems like 4 will do fine. How does wheel/tire size affect range? Seems to me that most sites/posts say that on any lift kit 10 inch wheels and tires are required. If so, why? I have heard that larger than 22 inch tires effect range. 22 seems like more than enough tire for me. I am not going through major mud here. How does tire width effect range? I've seen several lifted carts around here with stock rims. I am wondering why the internet stuff I read says that those are not the way to go. I am confused. Thanks for any help. |

Re: Tire, wheel, and lift kit question for build
I'm new to this but I was talking in another part of the fourm and I was going to go with 8" rims when this valid post made its way to me.. Needless to say I am now ordering 10" wheels and 22" tires........
Because of the increased sidewall of the tire for an 8" wheel (more sidewall/less wheel vs a 10" wheel = less sidewall and more wheel). The ride is more cushy, which is great for backyards & dirt roads. I found myself more on paved roads and the softer sidewall gives it a squishy feel/ride, especially when turning. Add a lift and rear seat and your center of gravity is a LOT higher. Higher CG and squishy is a concern for me. The 10" will lessen the effect, as I've found out when driving other carts with lift and 10" wheels and 22" tires. Just a preference for me. (I should probably go slower around the corners!) I still run the 8" wheels, just have to watch the speed around the corners. |

You could go with 20" tires instead of 22.

Re: Tire, wheel, and lift kit question for build
main reason for 10" wheels is to clear the rim with the lift

Also consider changing over to a reversing contactor versus a HD FnR, anything over about 500 amps and the HD Fnr wont be happy.

Re: Tire, wheel, and lift kit question for build
8" wheels fit my budget at the time. I noticed the squishy feeling after the fact. Later, I added the rear seat and discovered the higher CG. CTD posted for that particular spindle lift (looks like a Jake's 6" Spindle Lift), it requires 10" wheels for inside clearance (maybe offset rims as well). Other lifts may or may not require 10" wheels or offset.
I have the Buggies Unlimited 6" Spindle Lift (Trademark Carts - sponsor) Now I could be dead wrong, but the 22" tires give 2" of lift vs. stock 18" tires and the BU spindle lift provides 4" of lift (this may vary by lift mfg.) for a total of 6" of lift. 22" tires for the BU spindle lift are max size or they will rub when turning. Jake's lift may be different as it looks like a true 6" spindle lift. Gotta do your homework and ask lots of questions. You'll figure out what's right for you. I have the same set up your getting from Scotty and its nice... When it comes to lifts since your planning on hunting with it if the terain is ruff I'd suggest the allsport super sport 6" lift I had a 6" spindle and 22" tires and didn't like it at all since the was no flex or articulation. Didn't care fore the 22" tires either cause I like too make my own trails and the 22's wouldn't get me over downed trees like I wanted so I am running 26's now and can go about any where I want |
