Softer tires for rocky country
I would like some opinions on tires. I fixed my 75 year old dad a series club car DS controller cart. He lives on 1200 acres in the texas hill country. He absolutely loves the cart and uses it every day. He likes it low to the ground so he can get on easier. I want to make it ride smoother. It has Carlisle links at 7 psi. I think a bit larger softer tire with a more round profile would be better. Any opinions on a more atv like low pressure tire? Has anyone used a 20x7-8 narrow kenda scorpion? Would the 18-9.5-8 ride better? I can lift it an inch or so and could push the front axle forward an inch to fit 20's. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We have steep rock and hard pan hills here...... I love my dirt devils. They are soft and provide plenty of grip.

Re: Softer tires for rocky country
Our cart came with 18-9.5-8 knobby tires on the rear, standard turf tires on the front. I can't find a brand name, just Shredder on the sidewall. They do great in mud and soft dirt but have a definite hum on pavement. The turf tires on front don't turn very well in mud if you are going fast.

Re: Softer tires for rocky country
My local Tractor Supply carries tires similar to RobCon's rear tires. They are in the size range you are seeking and are intended for lawn tractors. They are low pressure and soft. You could go by a local store that carries lawn tractor tires and take a look. The taller the tire you can run the better for a softer ride. Try to keep the 8" wheel and go with as tall a tire as possible.
I have 26" tall tires on 10" wheels and my cart rides great on and off pavement. My tires have such tall sidewalls they are part of my suspension, which makes the cart ride better than if I had low profile tires. You could also check with local lawn care supply stores, they might have tires that would work for you. |

Re: Softer tires for rocky country
Thank you robcons and blackberryhill. I am definitely sticking with 8 inch wheels. I think I am going to try 20's for more rock absorbing sidewalls. 22's would raise the cart too much for elderly access. Any thoughts on the narrower tires used for ATV fourwheel fronts? Some of them are 2 ply and list a lighter weight rating. Maybe that would be pushing it too far. I'm tempted to buy two and try then to see.
I'll take this opportunity to thank this forum. Dad loves that cart. His atv's stay parked in the garage. I swear he is trying to break it in half. Everytime I go see him, he tells me where else it can go. Steep hils, rock ledge, up the creek. I'm thinking about building another with more amps, highly modded to run 22" tires but lowered for ease of acess. That means body triming and ind front suspension but not lifted. I havent' seen that done here yet. It seems like a fun challange. |

Re: Softer tires for rocky country
I only recommend 4 ply atv tires for offroad to avoid punctures. Most stock carts fit 20 lawn tires but not 20 atv tires but depends on the cart. For best ride I would think a small wheel and wide tall tire would be best direction to look at, maybe 8-12psi or so. I would try to lift enough for 20s atv tires.

Re: Softer tires for rocky country
Thanks Sho305. I agree with you. I'm checking out 8 inch tires and am going to make 19 or 20 inch atv tires fit. I will go measure clearances in a few weeks. The combination of 20 x 8 limits choices a bit. When I check specs, the actual diameter and width on tires varies a lot. On different Kenda 20 inch tires, the actual diameter varies from 18.9 to 20.5.
If I can find the right tires, I am thinking 20x7x8 on a 8x5.5 wide offset rim on front and a wider 8 inch tire on back. The front is light. Maybe a narrow rounder shape tire will be more likely to flex and absorb on the front. When I do the tire change, I will post the results. It may be months before I get it done. |
