Default types of lifts and use??

hi!,

newbie here. i have a 96 ds. it was used to get up and down the hill at the lake. someone tried to steal it, bent up the rear seating and then someone used a can of Krylon to paint it pink. the cart is now destined for a new life as transportation around town. i want to lift it, put some cool looking tires and rims and will paint the body. questions are:

1. what kind of paint can i use on the body? it appears to be plastic, not fiberglass.

2. i have read alot about lifts, but dont know what the advantage of each is?

3. eventually the fe 290 will be replaced. but with ???

i will post some pics soon.

any and all info is appreciated- chuck

Pretty much any rattle can paint made for plastic will work, however, if you are looking for a "showroom shine" I'd recommend a professional paint job. Most diy paint jobs will turn out "good enough" if you do your prep, and spray in a temp controlled space. There are some paint made for flexible plastic, just look at your local paint store/department.

Ok, this will come down to budget, but here's "my" opinion. 1. Custom ATV front end 2. Long Travel Kit (like Jakes) 3. Axle drop lift 4. Spindle Lift 5. Home built lift If you have enough of a budget, spend the money on the long travel kit, they handle the best by far and are easy to bolt on with no guess work. If you want to make your own, go with an atv donor front end setup, they will have disk brakes and are proven off road. If you don't go off road, go with the axle drop and spend the money on the wheels and tires. It will look just as cool, but won't handle that great off road.

3. eventually the fe 290 will be replaced. but with ???

I vote for a honda clone engine. Look here in the Big Block section under Clone Swaps. Big power compared to stock, and easy on the wallet compared to a V Twin. I am in the process of doing this, at the advice of many who have done it before me.

thanks for the reply,

my neighbor owns a custom body shop, so painting wont be an issue. the cart will see mostly hard surface, small town roads, with an occasional field excursion. nothing like big mud holes and steep terrain. i have "real" ATV for that. basically a cool, run around town (B to B) type ride. will be using LED lighting as well. i will buy a manufactured lift (like jakes) nothing fabbed up.

i have a few tears in the body and a couple of holes. what to fix them with??

i am in the process of researching lifts and reading threads here.

for paint, was thinking metallic purple with red metallic accents. have no designs yet, still disassembling to wet sand:(

You might ask your body shop neighbor about the holes, although I've seen guys use plastic body filler and fiberglass with good success. You'll be happy with a Jake's kit, they are pretty high quality and I've never heard anything bad about them. If this is an electric cart, you might consult the guys in the electric carts section and see how they wire the lights up, I know voltage can sometimes be an issue with the elect carts. Yeah if you want a nice shiny paint job, go base/clear, your neighbor will tell you that's the most durable too....but more expensive. I know there are some enamels now that turn out pretty darn nice, so he can prob steer you in the right direction. For tires, I'd go with 22" all terrains. Any that you see advertised for carts will do nicely. They all ride pretty smooth on the road. For wheels, go cast aluminum in your favorite design. Sounds like you have a nice plan in place! Make sure you post pictures along the way, we like pics, even if it's dirty, rusty stuff!

i forgot to add that my cart is gas (fe290). been reading about the various power upgrades. i will be looking for a Briggs vanguard at yard sales and flea markets.

has anyone adapted a vertical shaft??

i am also thinking about increasing the stance of the cart for more stability and notice that there are several rims with offset. what does the phrase 2+5 mean? and what is the most reasonable extension for length and width? are fender flares needed?

i have taken a couple of pics of the vandalized cart and will post them tonight. gonna be interesting to see the transformation from POS to AWESOME!

who has the best deal on tire/wheel/lift kits?

TIA- chuck

ok, i have most of the body unbolted. only thing left is the FNR shifter. it is currently soaking in PB Blastr to prevent breakage. the rear folding seat is alot heavier than i expected! i will be looking for a lift with heavier rear springs.

i have done some reading on the Clone engines, but there is a you tube video of a vanguard with an unbelievably AWESOME sound. got to have one--someday:(

i am thinking bondo to fix the body blems.

There is a clone vtwin now about $1K for a new one, just came out. The 420 clones are 3-400 that is why they are used. Finding a used vanguard cheap is not a bad deal, many have done that if they can find one. I paid 264 for my 420 clone on sale, don't forget you still need exhaust and other parts depending on how you do the swap. Stock mufflers tend to choke off larger engines. 2+5 means 2" inside from center and 5" outside, stock is 3.5"/3.5". So that rim has 1.5" more wheel to the outside making your cart 3" wider (at the rim) and 1.5" more room behind the tire for it to not hit the cart body/frame/etc. Your width is determined by the lift you get, some are wider some not. Wider is more stable, higher is less so, if you have the coin the adjustable jakes might be a good choice. You only need enough lift to clear the tires, more is for looks, depending on how far your suspension travels of course. The long travel lifts ride nicer, usually wider, if they come with shocks they work even better.

thanks for the info. now i know what the number mean:) cant beat the forums for info. i am a member on a number of them and the information cant be beat! need to independently verify the info, but it is awesome!

i have seen a number of youtube videos and noticed that a number of them start in neutral and then shift into gear. at about what rpm is it possible to shift?

what does having the clutch "cut" mean? can it be done at home with a lathe?

saving $$ for the lift kit-tire combo. man it takes a while!
