Default What's the straight dope on billet wheel spacers?

My buggy is an 82' EZGO gasser. It has a 5 inch lift kit (Jake's) and Carlisle Stryker AT 22x11-8 tires. When the steering wheel is turned hard, there is a slight rub of the tires on the front leaf springs. When I drive, I avoid radical turns.....unfortunately, the "beautiful red-headed wench" does not! I am concerned one of the "knobs" will be knocked off when she drives. We use the cart solely for "gettin' 'round" on the ranch.

To alleviate this problem, I am considering installing 2" billet style wheel spacers. I have no experience with wheel spacers and I am seeking information/experience.

Reckon' anybody can help?

I don't think she is going to knock off a knob but putting a spacer is fine. I've put them on several carts with no problems

Many of the site sponsors carry them and the quality is great. I would look at the site sponsors first.

If your worried about them breaking, don't worry.

I have put them on 1-ton trucks with no issues.

Just keep em tight, check em a few times after you put them on.

The straight dope is that increasing the width of your wheel base after lifting is a very good idea. You can do it with billet spacers or stud extenders really doesn't matter on a golf cart. I have done both successfully and lean toward the billet, they look nicer and in my mind must be stronger. Like Nunya said, check em often especially on aluminum wheels......

PRECISELY why BGW is so great! Kind, competent counsel by the bushel-full!

A follow-up question.

Do wheel spacers have an effect upon steering, such as putting additional stress on the steering gears? (I have about a 1 1/2 inch play in the steering wheel {traced to the gearbox} and want to "baby it along" for a while before I do a rebuild)

I wasn't going to use spacers on mine, but when ya think ya got everything right.... one manufacturers version of things ruins it. I put the Jake's LT kit on, and Jake's clearly stated "Must have 10" wheels with deep bell". Tempest 10" wheels I used was probably 1/4" short in that corner cut.

Summit engineering spacers ordered. I used 1 1/2" at first, then seeing as to how little space was actually needed to clear, I ordered 1" spacers and will put the 1 1/2" on the rear to equal out. Summit Engineering is lightning fast on ship!

Wow! That's cheap! Wish I had known about those a year ago after buying two sets of used one's to find a price like that!
