Please help with upgrades
Hey guys, I have a 2008 TXT 36 volt. I just lifted it 6 inches via axel lift. also put 22 inch tires on 10 inch wheels.
everything else is bone stock. to this point i haven't ran it much do the weather, but prior to and since have had NO problems. My question is: can i leave it stock? or if i want to upgrade parts as I go, what is the order that should be done? also, what all should be upgrade and to what? and the approx. price of each? I don't nec need more speed or torque although who doesn't WANT more of both? Motor? Solenoid? HD FR switch? Controller? you guys are the best!!! |

Re: Please help with upgrades
I had a 36 volt txt EZ-GO lifted with 14" wheels and 23" tires. (The one in my avatar ) Was a lil slow for my taste . Did ok on the flats but even with fresh batteries and charge was still sluggish up hills . Everybody told me to go with a bigger controller , motor and add two batteries ( making it 48 volt ) . To ever get a real power difference . I ended up selling it before I could do these upgrades . Pretty pricey to make these upgrades but well worth it from what im told . - Mayor

Re: Please help with upgrades
We need to know which drive system you have to be able to answer questions specific to your cart. Generally speaking, the bigger tires have increased the final drive ratio. This will result in the loss of torque in the motor will have to work harder to turn those bigger tires. Overtime the higher amperage draw created by the increased loads will burnout the controller solenoid and Rotary forward reverse switch ( if you have a series can )
Take a look at the chart below and let us know which drive system you have. Also let us know how you intend to use a cart and what type of terrain you'll be using it on. |

THanks guys. My FR switch is below the knees. and to my knowledge there is no tow/run switch.
mostly in the yard or around the property, no real crazy hills or crazy mud, but not a street queen either, although that's what its been its entire life to this point. |

Re: Please help with upgrades
You have a series drive system. Series cards make more torque than speed.
A bigger controller, solenoid, cables, and heavy-duty directional switch, will get you more torque to turn those big tires. An increase in voltage will get you more speed and more torque. |

Re: Please help with upgrades
thanks Scotty, i doubt i'll upgrade to 48 volts.
back to my original question.....leaving it stock as is now, with the 22 inch tires will degrade my stock contorller, etc eventually? as far as those items, can you list for me the order i could replace them, ie, if i can't afford to replace them all at once in a lump, what can i do in increments, that won't ruin other parts, and what are the approx. new or used prices for each, maybe some part numbers or brands that are trusted or ok to use. not top of the line stuff. if i wanted a beast monster bruiser, i would have bought a badbad brand new, that said i do have a GATOR XUV that i use for crazy hauling and real work. |

Re: Please help with upgrades
I'm still learning the cart stuff as well but from what I have gathered thus far, the controller, solenoid, and F/R switch all have to be done together...someone correct me if I am wrong. The cost of these parts depends on the size of the upgrades (300A or 700A controller, for example) and brand. The cables are a lot cheaper to upgrade and can be done anytime. I'm going with 2 gauge cables on my cart but most here recommend 4 gauge cables.

Re: Please help with upgrades
The first thing that You should address are the cables and f&r switch at a min, especially is you smell hot electrical or any of the cables get more then 10°F above ambient temp. I'm not talking about just the 5 cables either, all the high current cables should be upgraded at the same time. I'd do 4 gauge. ScottyB sells the cables pre-made if you don't want to make them yourself. He also sells a HD f&r switch also. Those upgrades would fix the weakest links in your cart and make it very reliable.

considering you need to do this in stages, and you know that the big tires will degrade it eventually......the one big ticket item will be the controller. BUT if you don't do the other things first, it could harm the controller, so do that last. A good start, get a HD F&R switch, and 2ga cable set. Then next would be to go to ScottyB's CartsUnlimited.net and get one of his Speed Controller Packages which get you both the controller and the solenoid you will need/want. go to scotty's site and you can see the prices there. http://www.cartsunlimited.net/Home_Page.html |
