A question about charging.
Howdy All
I'm a newbie in the world of golf carts, but i got myself an old melex 112. It runs pretty good, but i just had to put a new battery in it and was wondering how long you should charge a golf cart. My charger has a timer on it that goes up to 12 hrs. but I wouldn't think you would need to charge it that long. Going the other way I'd hate to not charge it enough and end up over draining my batteries everytime I drive it. I usually charge it 3 to 4 hrs. but my amp draw hardly ever gets below 10 amps. Anybody got any ideas? Another question is about resistors. I saw on another web site that they sell a 3rd speed resistor in 9 gauge or 7 gauge. Whats the difference? and what are the resistors actually for? I've looked at several other forums online and the people on BGW seem to have the best knowledge base. I thank anyone for the help and am gonna post the rebuild pics for my Melex as I go. Thanx |

Re: A question about charging.
Well Mr Rollins you are right The people on BGW have the biggest golf cart knowledge base in the universe... Recently we have collaborated with the second biggest number one answer man so now we are without a doubt the biggest and best golf cart repair and modification site in the universe
Now about charging... if your charger never drops below 10 amps you are not charging enough! The finishing cycle is the longest of the 3 cycles it goes thru each time and is only 3-5 amps ... for hours. Put it on 12 hrs. It will shut off if it finishes before that..... 5-8 is average. Those old manual timer chargers were replaced with automatic chargers just for that reason.... Invest in a digital voltmeter and grab a SOC chart download from this site .... Hope this answers some of your Q P.S. WELCOME TO BGW !!! |

Re: A question about charging.
Excellent !!!
The resistors waste amperage ...... read that again Each time you set on the gas peddle, no matter how far you press it, the pack sends 100% of the amperage to the speed control and the coils waste whatever is not being called for.... Hope this makes sense |

Re: A question about charging.
To charge batteries correctly you need to figure out how long you use the cart. Since I take it you are not using it for golf, you can't set your hours on your round of golf. You need to go by "pedal time". If you went up the street for 5 minutes and came back, and set your timer on 12 hours, you would be overcharging your cart and those new battries....not good. If you did the same trip and charged it 1 hour, you would be under charging your batteries...again..not good. The meter on your charger does not tell you if your batteries are charged or not, but could be used to help you properly charge your new batteries. Good rule of thumb if you dont want to buy a meter. If you use your cart for between 10 to 20 minutes, charge it 9 hours, if you use it over that, charge it the full 12 hours. You would do this for about the first year if you used your cart on a regular basis. You would then start to cut DOWN the charge time as the batteries got older, this will give you the longest lifreout of your batteries. Or you could forget all of this and just buy an electronic timer and convert your charger to a fully automatic. Im not sure who is second best on this site but, you can see why Im number 1. Thanks for listening, by bye and buy bonds.
