Default Rear End Noise

I live in Tennessee and my golf cart was completely under water during the flood in May. We did not touch the cart only put in neutral and just pushed it for 2 weeks so it would not lock up. After 2 weeks of hot weather I then removed the battery cables and cleaned the battery posts. It worked like a charm. However it has been 2 months and we are hearing a noise in the rear end. We thought the gear oil had water in it. When we got ready to change the oil when we removed the cap there was not water in the oil. Not sure why it is making this noise. Please help
