Default Steering wheel adapter for Melex 512?

Anybody know what steering wheel adapter I can use for my Melex 512 to accept 5 hole steering wheel mount? Shaft has 21 teeth and looks to be 5/8 inch.

I am not sure myself. My idea was to take the wheel I have and cut the center out of it and use it as the adapter for my Grant Classic wheel. I am going to drill the center to the bolt pattern of the grant wheel and then bolt the 2 together. that should take care of it...

Just a thought.

If you do find out, please share.

Good luck!

I was thinking the same thing. Even the adapter manufacturers think I'm lying when I tell them how many splines there are!

I know the make cart adapters, Grant makes one, i am not sure about other manufacturers but Since we have the Polish carts it's going to be difficult. I am not sure if the EZGo ones mount. I have an EZGO Column at the house, I will have to check it when I get back from Vacation and see if the splines are the same. if so we may have a solution. Oh BTW if the EZGO ones work I found that the adapters for a Grant wheel are pretty cheap from Jegs.

Thought you would like to know

Yeah, I bought one for an EZGO on eBay. 36 splines, but same sized shaft. The company that made the adapter said they have never even heard of a steering shaft with splines in the 20's and recommended I go to a machine shop. I think the path of least resistance will probably be the EZGO steering shaft replacement.

I have a 97 melex i recently upgraded to 48v and this jerk conned me into an Alltrax SPB 48200. Oops, that's not the point....I have a dana axle, methinks and it is 19 spline, I thought? 36 spline? or maybe i don't know my parts well enough yet

The splines on the shaft in your gearbox that accept the motor are likely 19 spline. The steering shaft is where I had trouble here with my Melex as a 21 spline shaft when standard steering shafts are apparently 36.

Did you guys get any more information on this? I just bought an old 512G and want to do a little cleaning up. It needs a new steering wheel pretty bad. I'm also looking for a new floor mat but i may end up making a custom mat out of a bed liner.

I found a cheap and fairly easy way to use the existing Melex steering wheel hub with aftermarket steering wheels. Looks great and still works like a charm.

As you can see, my original steering wheel was functional but hideous:

I cut the hub out of it using a jigsaw with a metal blade:

Then ground it down to be perfectly circular on my bench grinder, and wire brushed the rest of it:

Then I painted it.

Front of hub, bolted to adapter for ezgo:

Rear view, showing back of steering wheel hub:

Finished product. The new steering wheel just screws to the adapter with the screws provided. I got the steering wheel on EBay with the adapter for $27 I think.
