Convert Melex 212 to smaller size
Hello, I brought a Melex 212 for $150, and thinking to convert it to a smaller size for back yard utility. The standard size is about 4f x 6.5f, I would like to convert it to around 3f x 5f. Sounds crazy, but I thought it seem not too hard to do. The cart and its electric motor is still running, but no batteries. The frame and suspension are good, and could be re-used in my "crazy" conversion idea.
The most concern to me now is to shorten the rear axle. One of the option that I thought is to cut the axle housing and short it, this seem fair to do. Next is to cut the axle shaft and re-spline. This is where I need help. The EZ-GO cart TXT has a rear axle shaft one short and one long. The short one is about 17 inch long, will the EZ-GO cart TXT axle shaft fit on Melex 212 rear differential gear box? I would appreciate any advice and information for the conversion. Thanks, tv |

Re: Convert Melex 212 to smaller size
It's not an impossible idea but it's one that will present many challenges... for instance how are you going to configure the batteries in the cart if you take a ft off of the side and end?
Simple answer to your first problem is take a ft out of the middle of the long axle and shaft housing.... no re-splining needed. |

For backyard used, I figured that I don't need golf cart batteries. I can use car batteries. Car batteries medium rated at 220A/hrs at 12V, that is 2600watts. The Melex 212 motor rating 36V at 57A, that is 2052Watts, over 2 horse power. I will have room for 3 car batteries. For the axle shaft, I am not fully understand your suggestion. Could you please type in more info? Thanks, tvn |
