Default Shift cable for G1!

I have been putting up with no reverse in the G1 for a while now since changing out the engine to an 8hp 4 stroke.

I'm heading out tomorrow to pick up a G2 rear third member for it tomorrow. I'm only getting the third member and the axle tubes. From what I've heard/read I can change the axles and tubes from the G1 rear and it will fit right in where the old rear is.

I'm not getting shift cables or any other parts.

My question, has anyone used a push/pull cable from the shift/throttle on an outboard engine for a shift cable and if so, will I be able to use just one cable? I'm sure that I should be able to work it out. I did pick up several of these cables from my dad's junk pile while down there the last couple weeks. I also got the control box with the sifters so should most likely be able to make a working shifter.

I also just wanted input from others on this plan.

Default Re: Shift cable for G1!

Made a trip today up to meet Kurt Kinion. Got a good look at his G2 with the Generac engine. Looks to be a beast. He has it apart for upgrades and repairs so didn't get to hear or see it run. But got some ideas for the build I'm getting ready to start on.

I also dropped off my spare generac engine so his brother can make a beast of his own.

In the deal with his brother I got a third member from a G2 for my G1 with the briggs engine so that I can get reverse back in it. I also took a look and discussed my idea of the single push/pull cable for shifting. I think it will work and will be getting started on that cart first. I'm also going to open up this rear and remove the governor parts and while I'm in there make my own posi-trac unit for it if I can get that part figured out.

Lots of fun in the shop and machine shop in my future.

Thanks Kurt for the great visit and the good info.
