Default The Craigslist EZGO

Forget lift kits and oversize tires and wheels, this is the true dark side. This CC Fanatic has just bought an EZGO (or in my book, an EZ-SLOW)

Listing on CL read: "'80s electric golf cart fair condition, all batteries good with charger, needs solenoid 500 obo", no pictures. After getting some pictures, I find out it's an older EZGO Marathon (Find out later it's an 87). Seller tells me he bought it over the summer from a guy who kept it at his lake house and that it was always garaged and plugged in whenever it was not used. He buys it this summer to tackle odd jobs around his farm (hauling firewood, etc.). He says all of the sudden it stops running and says it needs a solenoid. Here is the kicker, the 6 batteries that are in there are from March 2003, talk about old! The PPO must of really took good care of this thing. I asked if the batteries froze while it has been sitting, and he says they have not. After the exchange of a few texts, I decide to take the 45 min. ride to go check it out (figured he wouldn't take less than $400, but brought the trailer anyway). Get out there, and it is sitting in his front yard, on the charger, with the two front tires that are off the rim they are so flat. Look it over, it is not too bad. Few dents here and there, the battery tray is completely rotted / broken, but surprisingly enough, the frame is very solid. Pop the caps on one of the batteries, and sure enough, FROZEN. Either it froze overnight, or he fed me a line of crap. Figure out that the issue is not a solenoid problem and it that of the wiper contacts were arcing and burned. Anyway, tell him that really the best I can do it $200. No sooner after I said that, he said SOLD. Perfect! I don't think it will take too much to get it back to where I will like it. Right now, I think all it needs is a seat back assembly, battery rack repair / replacement, batteries (will pick up a used set), wiper board assembly, and a few wires that lead to the resistor box. All in all, not bad for $200

Sorry for the long-winded post, now for a few pictures:

NICE SCORE!!!

That is possibly one of the cleanest all stock Marathons I've seen, they're usually rusted apart or dented all to pieces.

Can we get a close up pic of the wiper and contacts, and maybe some of the bad wiring, plus the coils themselves at some point? (To inspect the coils, it's easiest to crawl under and look up, that box they're in is open-bottomed) I think you'll have this thing up and running in no time once you get the battery trays rebuilt.

Craigslist Club Car has better alliteration anyhow

When you get those pics, check for the rear end in this thread: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...-rear-end.html

My guess is you've got it if the cart is an 87, in 86.5-87 EZGO used an oddball non-DANA rear end. It's beefy, but you can't get stuff for it and the motor is way funky, it has a long keyed shaft with a gear that bolts on instead of the standard 10 or 19 splines. My 3 wheeler has the setup, and it's an 87. It's not necessarily a bad thing to have this rear end, it actually has a VERY slightly lower gear ratio, 12.55:1 instead of the customary 12.44:1, and like I said before, it's really beefy. Just hope and pray that you don't have motor issues.

I took a quick glance underneath when I first looked at it, and I want to say it has that rear end. Not 100% positive, but pretty sure it does. I think I may just unbolt that resistor box and take it out. With my luck, the tray will break and the batteries will fall on me

Sounds like my luck. Batteries are heavy, probably best to just look from the topside. my cover bolts are rusted all to pieces, looks like yours are in better shape.

You should like it once you get it running, my cart has torque out the wazoo. It isn't a smooth system at all though, not comparable to V-glide carts even, more comparable to the bumpy acceleration of the 5 solenoid CCs. This is overcome by the fact that you can do neck snapping takeoffs and decent (for a stock cart) burnouts.

Torque out the wazoo is always a good thing. How would you compare this to a 36v resistor CC in means of hill climbing?

In my experience, just a little better. The 86.5 and 87 Marathons had that VERY slightly lower ratio, plus a pretty decent motor. The wiper board, though not evidenced by yours, is also less likely to have a meltdown than the plastic-cased V-glides. My problem with hill climbing in my cart is on the super steep stuff the front end likes to float a little since it's lighter than a 4 wheel model. Plus, it runs out of traction pretty easily and you just spin while sliding backwards.
