1999 EZGO TXT Resto Mod Build thread
Hello BGW crew!
I've been lurking here for several months after I came into the "hand me down" possession of this beauty. Upon arrival, I knew few things: 1999 EZGO TXT Gasser, seized Robin 295, abused and barely alive. I say unto you: Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can build him better than he was before. BETTER....STRONGER....FASTER! Behold, the Six Million Dollar buggy! (well, maybe a few pesos less 'cuase I sure ain't Oscar Goldman!) |

A bit more dismantled. Some rust killer. Primed and painted and a sneek peek at rear axle prep and painted. Also, next day was recycle day, so the bike doubled duty as cardboard stacking shelf!

Re: 1999 EZGO TXT Resto Mod Build thread
My plan for this beauty:
Plenty 'O Power = Briggs Vanguard 16 HP (local Craigslist find, took a few months, and drove a long way to see several before I found "the One"!) better clearance = 23x10.50x12 tires/ black steel rims; Jake's lift kit Ordered up lots o stuff from CPP: New stainless header/quiet muffler Comet 780 clutch rev kit K&N filter Heavy duty belt Rear HD springs Wheels/ Tires and lift came from non-sponsor vendor Miscellaneous parts coming in from all over the place: shocks Gabriel Air shocks battery/ cables Autozone paint and supplies (Walmart is the cheapest) nuts/ bolts/ fasteners (tractor supply in bulk!) of course, some engine parts needed (dang that front cover gasket was expensive from local Briggs engine guy) Odds and ends from Amazon, rivet gun, rivets, 14GA wire/connectors/heat shrink tube, Tach (haven't decided which one yet) and some LED lighting planned. Last photos of the powerplant... Rev Kit in (do yourself a favor and pick up a spring compressor!) Governor deleted including the weights / drilled tapped 1/4 npt plug Cam advanced Flywheel key in correct position (not pictured) A bit of starting fluid and a 665 cca battery, the beast kicked alive within a few cranks of the starter. Sounds like a little Harley motor running in the dirveway! |

Re: 1999 EZGO TXT Resto Mod Build thread
I've got a rolling chassis together at this point.
Concerned that I may have clearance issues and I've got a bit of a rake in the front. Front of frame measured at the curve is at 17" and back edge in front of wheel well is at 19". I planned to use the air shocks to level it out but I'm now learning about axle wrap when I pump the shocks up beyond about 20 lbs. |

Re: 1999 EZGO TXT Resto Mod Build thread
Some more shots of the front end clearance and angles.
I have read about several methods to overcome the wrap issue here on BGW. Trailing arms seem to be a common choice, but I don't want to hinder steering clearance depending on where the mounts for the link ends go on the frame. I'm thinking on cutting off the shock mounts in their current positions. Then put them back on the front of the axle. I'll space them further down towards the knuckles and angle them in a straight line above the axle to the mounting holes in the frame so the rotational force is gone. All theory of course. I'm a noob at fabrication so we'll see how it goes! I have almost 8" of travel in the Gabriel shocks so I can shorten the mounts up to end up with 4" travel in both directions. Of course, any advice or experience or theory is welcomed on front end geometry and setup! Last edited by VanX; 04-28-2016 at 02:10 PM.. Reason: asking for advice |
