Default Unbalanced Trojans tripping Dpi charger

I'm having trouble charging my 48v Yamaha cart with my DPI charger. I am new so many if this is obvious I apologize. Every time I plug in the charger I get the 3 flash then click which the manual reads as imbalance. I've applied a voltmeter to each battery and all seems well. The fella I bought it from wired the lights to 2 8v and I know now that was improper, but how do I get to charging again? Shouldn't the DPI just charge anyway and eventually pull out the imbalance by getting all batteries to 100%?

You might charge the two batteries with a car charger, that may get them closer so the dpi will charge. I'm with you I though the dpi would charge them and correct that. Also maybe you can relocate the batteries in the series.

I don't know what I'm talking about here, but, I was told in conversation once, that the battery pack has to be at 48, or 50 volts, before the cart charger will recognize and charge the pack. So, you may have to charge the more depleted battery's seperately with a car charger before adding them back to the pack!!

And I may be saying the same thing Mr Golf is saying!!

Hope this helps !!

As far as correcting the imbalance...the charger cannot do that. the charger puts the same charge into all the batteries until the cut off voltage is reached.
If you charge low and high batteries together they will still be low and high at the end of the charge, so you have to do as some one suggested and level them up yourself with an auto charger before the cart charger.

Alright, so if I use a car charger (i.e. 12v) am I risking blowing them up? It appears if they cannot self balance at all I need to get all 6 to 100% independently before reapplying normal charging methods. How do I do that without buying an 8v charger for one single use?

Unhappy Re: Unbalanced Trojans tripping Dpi charger

Alright, live update: I tested each battery using voltmeter and found nearly all 6 batteries has the same voltage...couldn't find more than 1v difference between the batteries. I have disconnected one of the 8v that was tapped for lights and it is now connected to a 2 amp 12v trickle charger. I plan change to the other battery late tonight and trickle charge the other overnight. In the morning I will reconnect all and hope that the DPI will play ball. Am I missing a critical step or missing something major?

You are on the right track, watch the voltage, you don't want them to charge over 10.2 volts on the trickle charger.

1V is a huge difference. For an 8V battery 8.49V is 100% SOC, whereas 7.67V is only 10% SOC. So 1V is the difference between fully charged and dead.

Post the voltages and SPG for each of your batteries when you get a chance.

Pulled the reading last night, 7.90 for both of the batteries that were running the headlights, the others range from 8.2 to 8.35. Based on Trijans SOC chart it looks like that's 40% on the bad batts and 80+% on the others. Charging now on a 1.25a smart charger...gonna be a while. Is this difference enough to explain the charger not working? Anyone know the specs on that differential check by DPI?
