Which would you keep and why?
I picked up several carts as a bundle several months back, most needed some work. The plan was to fix them up and get rid of a couple. The problem is I like them all for different reasons. Currently out of work so one of these two needs to go.
The first is an early 1989 EZGO, so it has the larger carb and exhaust. Its lifted and has 22" fires on it. I got it running, but with the larger tires and stock everything else I'm getting about 15 mph out of it. The second is an 80's Yamaha G2, already has had the stock engine swapped for an 8hp Briggs & Stratton. More of a utility type cart with the bed, but this one pushes about 18 mph, and has much more torque to keep the speed up climbing my driveway. So obviously I like the look of the lift and larger tires of the EZGO, and if it had the speed and torque of the Yamaha I probably wouldn't be debating. In addition to the speed and torque of the Yamaha, I like the bed, and the fact that it's already been modified for s clone, so a future big block or something along those lines might be a little easier. What is your opinion and why? |

Re: Which would you keep and why?
Personally, I'd be most interested in which cart would be easier to sell, or would sell for more. I think the EZGO looks a little better, and with the lift and back seat would sell pretty easily here in south Georgia.
That, and the Yamaha already has the motor swap work done, has more torque and has the bed which it seems like you like or will use. Sell the EZGO, put the money into the Yamaha to add the things you like better about the EZGO (lift/tires). |

Thanks for the opinion SF. What would something like that EZGO sell for in your area?

Re: Which would you keep and why?
Could You post a pic of the engine bay, specifically the exhaust? I ask because if it's ANY sort of 89 then it's the 3pg which does in fact have the new-style exhaust (not the 1988 HO-style) and went back to the smaller carb ... My first cart was an 88 and I have had a few since then, You should be getting 20+ easily (actually more like 23) on 22" tires with the HO2PG, if it in fact has that engine. If the plate says 89, I'm willing to bet You have the 3PG 244cc with the BV18 carb unless someone has done some surgery, LOL.
To give an idea of price around here, a running 2-stroke Marathon is $600-1200 tops. If it's in decent shape, clean, good paint around a grand, closer to that $1200 if it's lifted, rear seat or cargo box, etc - if it's a 4-stroke (93-up) then $1500 is reachable, but it's pretty tough. As to the Yamaha, anything pre-G14 holds to the same rule, $600 to $1200 depending on appearance, add-ons, etc (subtract a couple hundred for the old 2-stroke G1's). Personally, in this case I'd second the opinion to keep the Yamaha. Any resale is basically shot due to the engine swap but You'll likely have a LOT more fun with it, it has a better suspension than the Marathon, Box, Canopy, etc - Your mileage may vary, of course :) |

Re: Which would you keep and why?
The EZGO is the 88 HO style engine setup, 2PG from everything I've been told. I just replaced the carb with the BV24 style.

Re: Which would you keep and why?
Yeah, that's an 88 exhaust all right ... Like I said, a correctly running HO should pull a solid 23mph on 22's - ditch the governor (pull the whole thing, the arm as well as the cable) and see if that gets You any more top end ...

Re: Which would you keep and why?
Yamaha has a forward/reverse trans-axle the Ez go does not. Yamaha has a much better front suspension than the Ez go. Just for these 2 reasons I would keep the Yamaha. Just my opinion, 2 stroke engines suck!

Re: Which would you keep and why?
Thanks for the info guys.
BCM...I'm new to carts, so you'll have to excuse the dumb questions, but I don't see a governor on this cart. The only cables left are the choke and the accelerator cable. What is the arm you're talking about that should be removed? |
