FINALLY building myself another Workhorse, need paint advice ...
SO I finally scored a nice 2000 MPT1200 to use as a platform for a 375/295 performance motor I've had stashed for about 2 years ... Fabbed up some .063 Aluminum Diamondplate Body Panels, Nivel dropped the LT kit yesterday, the new Suite Seats and Rims should be here Monday, I have to clean up and paint the factory HS rear end I have also been stashing for this project - but Now that I have the cowl painted, I'm up against a wall.
These are pics before I wetsanded, cut and buffed the cowl: 20171004_135735.jpg 20171004_140817.jpg 20171004_145538.jpg The paint is pretty serious, 3 coats of 2k primer, 2 Midnight Black Base, 3 intercoat clear with 3tsp/5oz of .008 Mirror Flake, 1 intercoat clear with Rootbeer Pearl (just the *tiniest* bit, wanted to warm up the flake a bit) and then 4 coats of Clear ... The issue is that it's not *quite* as bright as the diamondplate except in the sun (THEN all bets are off, it's almost painful to look at, hahaha). 20171005_140308.jpg Heres the $1m question, do I fab up new metal outers out of the mirrored Diamondplate for the dump bed to match the body, or do I just clean it up and shoot the same flake job as the cowl, what's your thought? The canopy and Suite Seats are Black, as are the rockers and obviously the plastics so it would be a 3-color cart no matter what I do - I just think doing the flake on the bed would balance it all out more than adding more Diamondplate ... What say You, LOL ?!?!?! |

I vote more paint!
You're going to have to hand out shades for people to look at in the sunlight. Looks sick! |

Re: FINALLY building myself another Workhorse, need paint advice ...
LOL, it's absolutely RIDICULOUS in direct sun ... I like to mount my LED bars on the upper cowl most of the time but I think it would reflect too much on this one so it's going up on the canopy, LOL ... So far the general consensus around here is more paint, actually would take more TIME than replacing the outers, but would save some $$ - the other point one of my employees brought up that made sense was that if it turns out to actually BE annotingly bright, I could always scuff it and shoot another coat or two of a Candy Clear over it to tame it down, we'll see.
The upside is that a customer saw it today and now wants me to do a cart for him in Blue Flake at the same concentration ... I had to "punt" and shoot a price before I really thought it all through, but after careful review the number seems to be good so if nothing else, it's already getting us more work !!! |
