First Cart Build - 1988 Club Car
I've been looking around the forum for a while and decided to take the plunge an build a cart. So I figured this would be a good place to put my progress.
I actually found two carts: a 1987 and a 1988 club car DS, that I picked up for practically nothing. I decided to use the 88 for my first build because the bones are in a little better shape and it has a 3.5 hp motor instead of the 2.5 in the 87. So far I have stripped it down and installed a solid state drive C54 kit from scottyb. This converted the cart from 36 to 48 volt. I then started the body prep work. As it sits now, I have the body primed and sanded. I am making my.own cables and will be installing batteries soon. I have ordered the yewy 1200z smart charger from scottyb as well. Next will be a lift kit, wheels/tires, and upgraded rear leaf springs. I am planning on the Jakes 6" Spindle lift and 12" wheels with 23" All Terrain tires. I am open to suggestions if anyone has any recommendations. I will primarily be using the cart at campgrounds, so nothing too extreme with off roading. Glad to be a part of the community, it seems like there are a lot of good people here with lots of useful insite! |

I ended up going with a 6 inch double a-arm lift and 23" tires. I have them installed now. This thing is looking awesome, I can't wait to get it moving!

Looks like it is coming along nicely. How long have you been working on it?

Good job so far. It does look awesome. You might want to check the driver side front tire. I think the rotation is wrong. If those are Sahara classics they are a directional tire. I just put a set on the cart I’m building. Took them out for the first time last weekend at the place where we camp. Ran them on dirt trails, pavement, up and down dirt hills and thru some mud. They done way better than I thought they would. Keep the pics coming please

Thanks for the advice, I didn't even think about the tread direction. You are right they are the sahara classics and I did put it on the wrong side, nice catch! I also have a new steering box and tie rod ends on order, then I can do an alignment on it as well.
I have been working on it for a few months, basically as much as I can afford to do at a time. |

I've made some more progress on the cart. I made 2 AWG cables and installed the batteries. I also replaced the steering box and all the tie rod ends. It runs great! It will run about 22 mph on flat ground and hit 25 on a downhill. Started playing with paint now. And just the cosmetics left to go.
