Rebuilding my VW powered Yamaha G14 limo

This is what I started with. The builder(s) did some things right and some things horribly wrong. I am in the process of fixing the wrong things and making it more safe and reliable. The first thing I did was cut away that terrible excuse for a roll cage. The green carpet is gone. The carb and ignition have been rebuilt by me. I installed an EMPI shifter and fabricated adjustable linkage for it. Now it runs great and shifts.

Now I've moved on to the front suspension. The triangulated four link wasn't even close to right. The air shocks were kinda fun though Steering was a chore using what it came with.

The previous owner(s) unfortunately cut away the factory shock mounts so I will have to fabricate new ones.

It was necessary to cut off the front bumper to make room for the new suspension, but I plan on re-using it. The new suspension system won't likely be tall enough so I plan on fabricating a drop bracket and struts that attach to the frame behind it.

Here is video of the last ride along before the front suspension tear down. We were in the process of adjusting the shift linkage.



Re-building the carb and installing electronic ignition made it very responsive!

Today I continued to mock up the front end so I could take measurements. I determined that I need to build a drop bracket that gives about 8 inches of additional lift. I think it would be a good idea to build struts attached at the rear of the lift and the frame to strengthen the front end. Let me know what you think!

how much for the air shocks?

do you really need additional lift in the front? what about leaving it with a nose down attitude?

The air ride shocks are HUGE! I was thinking of trying to fit them on my silverado in the rear, it has a 14 inch lift (the air shocks look like the right length for it extended and compressed).

I think the additional lift in front is needed. the shift linkage hangs down quite a bit and the vw trans axle is quite a bit taller than the front end with the jakes lift. I am building the bracket for the front in a way that it can be removed if I decide not to use it. I have already started fabricating the bracket and I wil post pics of it soon

Made some good progress!

The pictures are of the front lift bracket, rear lift bracket, both brackets and tabs for mounting. The tabs were tacked on to the front bracket.
