Default 82 Marathon Rebuild

Hello All

I am finally getting around to posting my project. I got it running a couple of days ago. I have not had a chance to put more the 5 minutes on her. It started snowing and I still have some tidying up to do and didn't want to get the girl dirty.

It all started right after I bought it. Ran good etc. So I put a new belt on it, and the clutches started acting up. And still are I started poking around in the engine compartment, got on line and found this place. Many dollars later (many still to go) here I am.

Here are some before pics

I thought the burn pattern on the head was strange. I have never seen one burn like that. Any thought on what would cause this. It couldn't have been making the most power it could have. I didn't notice it until after I had laid the head on the bench. I dont know if it was on the intake side or exhaust (I suspect the exhaust side)

Well more to come. I cut up the muffler and found a suprise. I have pics I can put up later. I thought mufflers had fiberglass packing in them.

Dinner time and all

David

You may want to PM a moderator and have them move this thread to the Members Rides section. It will get more attention there.

Follow up

I was curious about the muffler so I did a little surgery. The cart was loud and I could tell that a baffle was rattling at high RPM.

Don't bother cutting either end off. Double wall

I found some springs off of a 3 wheel cart. It's an old electric down at the lake where I have a cabin. They are about 4 inches longer but are too soft i'm afraid. I put a scale on the drill press and measured 1 inch of compression. The longer springs just measured 73 lbs. My stock springs measured 165 lbs

I have a new drive clutch coming from Tom There is something up with the clutches that I have not been able to figure out. When I get going down a hill and get up a good head of steam, if feels like the back tires lock up, slamming me forward. Then, when it has slowed way down, it releases and everything is fine. It started this when I put a new belt on before the rebuild. The belt is real tight. No slippage when you start it. Any ideas

Well, I jacked up the rear end and ran it up to speed where I have been having problems. I let up on the gas slightly, and the driven clutch popped open. Then the drive belt got sucked all the way down to the center of the clutch and wadded up slightly, causing the braking effect. I do have one ramp missing (on order) but other wise the clutch looks fine. Like I said, this all started when I put a new belt on. It is tight as he!!. The cart lurches with every engine stroke. I would have thought it would have broken in by now. I have quite some time on it before the rebuild.
