Default Spreads Hauler

Okay, I promised some pics of my Hauler that I just picked up. It runs and runs strong, but I am going to have to sink a few bucks to get it up to snuff. You can see in the pics, the improvised exhaust, air filter, and most heart breaking, the driverside axle tube. That one isn't going to be cheap. After a week of driving, the rear diff is pissin out oil like crazy. I don't think you can see in the pics, but someone tack welded 2 alen keys from the axle tube to the rear and tack welded spots all over the place probably in attempt to stop the leak. I don't know what the tube welded over the top of the axle is even there for.

Hopefully, when it is done, I'll have it running better without any leaks, have it lifted with some nice knobby tires and have it painted white with orange racing stripes on it. I know, I wouldn't want to paint any decent buggie with these colors either, but since I am driving it around a worksite, I figured I would paint it with the development's colors and paint the logo of the future development. See www.ridgehill.com for more!!! My buggy should get its works worth out here!

Mike,

Thanks for the post. I sent out parts lists to some different dealers, but I may have actually missed your shop. Obviously price will dictate my shopping habits, but I am a big fan of good customer service and building relationships with any supplier/dealers in all my dealings. I'll send you off an email with a phone call on Mon.

Hey Mike, looks like you got your self a project. Thanks for the post on my workhorse build!! I put a big block in mine so I have the old engine (it's blown) and some parts you might need, like the airbox so let me know. As far as your rear end leak you most likely will need to replace the rear axle seals which is not a big deal, I had to do mine. Please keep us up to date with photos of your work!! Good luck and have fun.

Jimbo,

You're right about the seals. I got to pull off the ds axle and check it out, that will be first up this week. I now have no muffler and I took the dump bed off, so you can guess how freakin loud this is!!! I'll post some more pics of the hack welding job someone did to this axle as I yank it apart.

My leak was on the same side. While I had things apart I just replaced both sides and did the brakes at the same time. If you had oil in the tube you will want to check the brakes while your in there because oil might have contaminated them. Is this your first cart because it sound like you've done this before.

Most complimentary about the thinking I have done this before! Actually this is my first time diving into carts. Thanks to the good people on this and other boards, there is a megaf-ckton of info out there to help newbies along. I actually only started pulling apart my own car about 2 years ago. I could read the Haynes manual like 20 times, but until I actually put a wrench to a nut, I didn't actually learn anything. While I understand these carts are the simplest in technology, the underlying principles help me to understand what actually happens in my own car (to some extent). I bought my cart as a way to get around an 86 acre construction site w/o using my car, but now it has exploded into sooo much more. I can't wait to get moving on things, but alas one day at a time. (And I gotta try not to blow too much of the free cash budget either!).

Believe me I know what you mean about spending a lot on a cart. When you tear it down and start puting it all back together you think well while I'm doing this I might as well do that and before you know it you got a stereo system and all the other fun stuff into it.

Oh yeah, a stereo is actually higher on the list than a lift kit at this point. Gotta have tunes man!

Default Attack of the hack tack weld

Okay, you ppl have to see this crap. Not long after I started driving around my Hauler, I noticed a pretty bad drip out of the driverside axle. (Bad as in about 1/2 to 1 ounces every use.) I'm thinking based on this excessively bad welding job, that the rear axle tube is cracked between the hub and the tube. I won't know until I yank it off which will hopefully be tomorrow. Check out the nifty use of Alan keys tacked to the tube.
