Default Naptime's slow but sure build

Well, some of you may have read my introduction thread. I'm new to the board. I have two carts. Both are ezgo txt gas.

The first is somewhat stock, with the addition of a stock roof, windshield, and rear seat, light kit and horn. other than, nothing has been done to it. The cart's primary function is getting around our campground in the summertime.

Last summer i happend across a deal from someone who was leaving the campground and offered to sell thier ezgo for dirt cheap, so i jumped on it.

This thread will be for the rebuild of the new cart. It will be slow going, probably not getting near completion until next spring  Mainly because i will be using the cart all summer, and only performing minor work on it as the summer rolls on.

Last week i tore it down and started on the paint. As the summer moves forward, i intend to build a custom roof and windshield. POSSIBLY add some heavy duty rear springs for a little lift, and replace all the belts, plugs, wires, etc.. and a custom rear seat.

when winter arrives, i'm planning for a 3"-4" front and rear lift. some larger tires, and new body panels. and we'll see what else.

unfortunately i never bothered to take a picture of the cart last year. but here is a picture from our annual 4th of july parade, with my sister and her family on it. It's the blue cart.

the green cart in front is my other ezgo.

so, last weekend i finally decided to tear the cart apart and get new paint on it.

i wasn't sure what this cart had been through in the past, but i did know for sure that it was blue, and there were spots where i could see red, and other spots where i could see white.

the blue had definitely been rolled on with a roller. it was very bumpy and textured with lots of runs and drips everywhere.

i am by no means a painter. i have painted two of my own cars the proper way, in my garage. but i had no desire to put that much effort into the cart, as we use it at the campground, and aside from getting around, we also take them out into the woods where we have a lot of trails. we go out there and dodge around in the mud and get stuck. its not uncommon to scrape a tree now and then. we are also fond of going out at night, turning our lights off, and playing golf cart hide n seek in the woods. :)

so, there is no point in doing great paint, only to mess it up in a few days.

so, i opted for krylon fusion, as i have used it before on my scooter with great success.

before getting started i came online to try and find out how to remove the body. thus finding this site and the step by step sticky on removing the panels .. THANKS !!!

i have built three air bagged minitrucks that laid frame. i have built numerous car stereo systems, and have held numerous national records and titles in car audio. i have built a chopper from the ground up, that i ride anytime mother nature allows. and i've helped a buddy build his 71 honda cafe racer.

but i was nervous about digging into the cart!!!

but, once i found the step by step, i was ready to roll.

from the moment i grabbed the drill, i was sitting down enjoying the fruits of my labor a mere 30 minutes later.

once i had the panels removed i coudl really get a better look at what's been going on with this body..

this cart started life off with white panels.

then somebody shot it with primer and painted it red.

later, someone else painted it white.. go figure..

and then over that, someone painted it blue, with a roller.

i've got my work cut out....

i sanded the front cowl for about an hour.. i know the "right" way to sand is to block it.. but that's too much work for me, and way to much for this paint job.

so, some 80 grit on a palm sander, and away i went. i smoothed it out SLIGHLTY with some 200 grit after wards. and then washed and dried to prepare for paint.

i initially just wanted to smooth out the blue. but that was in worse shape than i thought. then i reached the white layers, and then the red, and the primer, and finally the white natural surface.

so i started to sand all the way down, and then finally realized there wasnt much point. it's still going to be a weekend rattle can job thats gonna get nicked and scraped in the woods.

after i got the front sanded and ready, i took it to the car wash to power wash it before painting.

i figured i would run the whole cart over, since it had quite a bit of dirt and mud under the body. im sure its been a large number of years since the undercarriage was cleaned. and i could tell this was the first time the body has been removed.

then i started working on the design i would use for the second color. cream.

after laying it out on paper and getting it transfered from left to right, i finally got the body all taped off and ready for the next color.
